I love my GeForce 2 GTS 64 DDR and GF4 Ti4200. The first served me several years and others since. I've lended it out to two others now who have used it flawlessly. My Ti4200 is still in one of my desktops and is probably the best performance vs. pricerange card out to date. That's the old card though.

I currently have an ATI preference. Nvidia is making a comeback towards ATI in the newer line of cards, but in the generation and price range you're looking at, ATI is probably the way to go.

For under $150, you can pick up a new or used (cheaper) 9700 pro 128. If you're willing to go a bit higher you can get a 9800 pro 128.

Use Newegg for reliability and pricewatch for the obvious.

Its simply not worth it to pick up a 9700 or 9800.. Go with a newer ATI card or with the Geforce 6800..

If your PC is too weak to support a 6800, I'd upgrade it first, then look at a 6800 when ones cashflow permits.

I can't ever see myself buying a $400 video card. My budget is maybe $150. Athlon 1800+ 1 gig ram

Wait for the cheaper 6000 Nvidia cards or for the price to lower.

Which hopefully won't require new PSUs.

Buy a new card now or later, the problem is always the same Lyion. This tech jump is a bit larger, but it's always the same.

If he's not going to spend more than $150, he'll feel it later, but most people are like that.
