http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/policy/naming.shtml

This may hold true for roses, but there's nothing you can do to make an Orc smell good, so you might as well give yours a good name. One of the first adventures you will embark upon within World of Warcraft will be that of choosing a character name. While your subsequent exploits should prove infinitely more exhilarating, great care should be given to name selection. The first impression other players have of you will be based on your name, so it's best to start off on the right foot. While choosing the perfect name for your character is left to your discretion, we have determined that some types of names are not allowed in this game.

Below are guidelines to help you determine whether or not the name you have chosen is appropriate for your character, guild, or pet. Hopefully, we encompass all manner of offensive names; however there may be inappropriate names which do not fit into any of these categories. In addition, the GM staff will only change a character's name if it is indeed found inappropriate, we will not change character names for any other reason. We reserve the right to evaluate each incident on a case by case basis and in extreme cases, take action not detailed here.

Racial/Ethnic
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Promote racial/ethnic hatred
* Are recognized as racial/ethnic slurs
* Allude to symbols of racial/ethnic hatred
* Have any racial/ethnic connotations

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be temporarily suspended from the game
* Likely be given a final warning if any negative sentiment/language is present, any further TOU violations will result in permanent suspension

While these repercussions may seem harsh, we feel very strongly that these names have no place within the world of Azeroth due to their extremely offensive nature.

Extreme Sexuality/Violence
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Refer to extreme violent and/or sexual acts
* Refer to extremely violent real life actions

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be temporarily suspended from the game
* Likely be given a final warning. Any further TOU violations will result in permanent suspension

While these repercussions may seem harsh, we feel very strongly that these names have no place within Azeroth due to their extremely offensive nature.

National
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Promote national hatred
* Are recognized as national slurs
* Allude to symbols of national hatred
* Have any national connotations

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be given a warning
* Be temporarily suspended if any negative sentiment/language is present

Sexual Orientation
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Insultingly refer to any aspect of sexual orientation pertaining to themselves or other players

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be temporarily suspended from the game

Obscene/Vulgar
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Are inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions
* Are pornographic in nature

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be temporarily suspended from the game

Inappropriate language
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Are mildly inappropriate references to human anatomy or bodily functions
* Are otherwise considered objectionable

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be given a warning

Harassing or Defamatory
This category includes both clear and masked names which:

* Insultingly refers to other characters, players, Blizzard employees, or groups of people, be they in the game or external

* Be prompted to select a new name
* Be given a warning

Major Religions or Religious Figureheads

* Mimic major religions or religious figureheads (e.g., Jesus, Christianity, Buddha)

* Be informed that the name is improper and be prompted to select a new name
* Be given a warning

* Are references to very well known people, characters, places, or things
* Examples: "Britneyspears", "Austinpowers", "Mcdonald's", "Georgewashington", "Newyork"

* Consist of language existent only in online communication
* Examples: "Roflcopter", "xxnewbxx", "Roxxoryou"

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Informed that the name is improper and be prompted to select a new name

Titles
Titles Fantasy titles should be earned through the mechanics of the game, and should not be recreated through character naming. This category includes names which:

* Consist of any title prefix or suffix attached to a characters name be it fantasy-based or not
* Examples: "KingMike", "PresidentSanchez"

If a player is found to have such a name, he/she will:

* Informed that the name is improper and be prompted to select a new name

IMPORTANT

* Repeatedly violating any area of the TOU, including the areas detailed above, will often result in temporary suspension from the game.
* This policy is not language-restrictive. Names that fall under this policy will always be subject to the repercussions listed, whether they are inappropriate in English or any other language.

The bottom line is that we want World of Warcraft to be a fun and safe environment for all players. World of Warcraft is an MMORPG, and the key words are "Massively Multiplayer." In playing this game, you will encounter thousands of other players who share different experiences and come from vastly different backgrounds. While a certain name may not be offensive to you, consider the fact that that same name may have a completely different effect on someone else. We've done everything we can to make this a great game but now it's up to you, the players, to breathe life into the world. Choose wisely my friends.

Dude, why in the world do you play Fantasy Role Playing games if you hate so much about them?

As if "Maverick" and "Goose" smack of personality and originality.

I should add I completely love this rule.

I hate idiot names with a passion.. Nothing worse than travelling to a stellar new zone with awesome graphics and cool monsters only to have Stabj00 stand in front of you and completely fuck up the immersion.

Yeah, theyre as shitty as the people who ripoff major fiction names such as Drizzt etc.

WoW would be a better world indeed if it wasnt submitted to your faggotry.

People whine like little bitches too much, but yes the stupid names are annoying...I just realize people with stupid names are actually faggots in real life.

Not having a naming policy does help you weed out the morons so you don't accident;y group with them. But, I'd rather not have their flaming idiocy shoved in my face.

Sort of how I feel. However I actually prefer to leave in the stupid names. If someone has opted to call themselves UberPally or OwnzU or HomerSimpson or Legolas, I like knowing that given the option, this is what these people would choose to be known as. It helps me stay far away from them.

I also find some of the creative names really amusing. I find it's sort of sad that Blizzard would enforce a 'Fantasy World' naming policy when so many of the NPCs, quests and items have such tongue in cheek names. Half the game content violates their own naming policy.

oh snap i have seen the light...

guys like Tigole Bitties, Marck EMarck, and and Ronald McDonalds all sucked at EQ.

If you don't know all those guys were LoS for a long time and have since been nerfed.

The bottom line is that the stupid ass fantasy genre names and roleplaying get real fucking stale after about 5 minutes. Every person I have ever known to avidly roleplay ditched that shit within weeks.

I play these games because the people behind the toon tend to be interesting. A bunch of dipshits named Legolas, and Arthur SuperKnight IV are fucking boring.

Perfect example... when I got name nerfed the GM gave me the name "Korgull". WTF is a "Korgull"???? How the hell can anyone named Korgull get any notoriety or fame?

They can't... its impossible. Now someone named TYRANOSORIS SUPERWILLIAMSHATNER is destined for glory and fame.

in all honestly I won't be. I'm having a real good time with the current EQ. I'm gonna try EQ2 simply because I hope it will be an upgraded version of EQ1. Not to mention I just haven't read anything about WoW that makes me believe it to be a complex game with any great deal of depth.

I'm really surprised all the loud people who heralded WoW as the killer of EQ have sat quietly by this far into beta.

After having played EQ off and on for three years I have really only skimmed the surface of Norrath, and still have a lot more to do and learn. WoW just looks too simple. I especially don't like the lack of diverse and distinct classes.

I'd be interested if anyone could refute my opinions.

WoW does lack depth and customization at this time. I'm sure EQ was fairly shallow when it first was released too.

3 TOTALLY different talent trees isn't customization? NONE of the raid content is in, HALF of the high end content is in. WoW is already more playable than EQ was 4 years after release. I don't really care if you do play or not. After playing WoW and EQ2, there is no way I'll be touching EQ2.
