So says Wisconsin State representative Daniel LaMahieu, who wants to make it illegal for female students in the University of Wisconsin system to have access to birth control.

He doesn't want them to have access to emergency birth control, either. I guess since women who are raped are, one way or another, asking for it, correct?
Write him and tell him what an asshat idea this is.
Then
sign the petition at Planned Parenthood.
Have a lovely day

Yeah, the whole premise is readily accessible birth control makes it socially acceptable to have sex or some other claptrap.
It's part of the fight against abortion. Birth control does no good if there's nothing there in case it fails.

Actually, you are distorting this. He is trying to prevent the university from advertising for and excessively distributing the morning after pill
What pissed him off is the university put out ads urging students to get advance prescriptions for the morning after pill before leaving for spring break. That does seem a bit ridiculous.
I personally dont care, but I can see where it might irk a person who has kids going there.

Yes they did advertise picking up the morning after pill. They were not saying, hey go have sex here is your backup. They are say we know you are going to have sex, we are not stupid. Since you are going to do it, we are going to do what we can to keep our students as safe as possible.
The executive director of the clinic, Kathleen Poi had this to say.
When a student is here in Madison, they know what their resources are. So if, on Saturday night, the condom breaks, on Sunday they can call and get a prescription for emergency contraception, When they're in Florida, and that same thing happens, they can't.
Some people really are blind. Taking away contraseptives is not going to stop people from having sex. They are still going to do it, they are going to get pregnent, some of them are going to have abortions. Had they been able to get the protection they needed the abortions wouldn't happen.

I thought most college students were 18 and over? So when did the school deside to start playing the role of "mom and dad" for a bunch of young adults?

You know it wasn't in California, since 90% of the students can't speak English anyways....
Gidan, I'd hope people would have the brains to be on birth control if they are promiscous. Advertising to get the morning after pill is a bit silly, ya think? This is college, after all.

I would hope people wear setbelts when they drive, advertising that they buy a car with airbags is a bit silly, ya think?
extreme comparison, yes. Things do go wrong though. Also, if this bill goes through, it could make it illegal for the school to have any part in these women being able to get the birth controle pill as well. So that would be 1 form of protection not available to them.
Also, was siad before. Things happen, protection is not 100%. Lets say they are using condoms and it breaks while they are on spring break, they dont knwo where to turn, what do they do? They hope they dont get pregnant. The school was just trying to give them some insurnce incase something like that happened while they were not at school where that protection is available.

Planned Parenthood sucks. The name is an oxymoron too.

Actually planned parenthood is a great organization. They do not jsut tell all woment o get abortions. I have known many women who worked for them. They usually stress having the child. They try and help you start planning your life with the new child. They want parents to be parents when they are ready for the responcibility. Some people who came in the door are, others are not. Many people use planned parenthood simply because they can not afford to go elsewhere.

Planned Parenthood is where I go to get my Depo shot (well, I will if they ever call me back, I'm about to give up and have them give me an exam [TMI!]). I am PLANNING when I want to have my next child. (2 years, Gidan, be ready!) If it werent for Planned Parenthood, I would spent twice as much at a gyno for th same shot. And yes, they stress being a parent, though they know some people just arent ready. (i.e. a married couple who isnt financially stable enough to have a baby)

That's a profound nugget of info. Care to elaborate on how it's an oxymoron?

I go to Family Planning, which is rather like Planned Parenthood, great place. But I must be a slut because I take the pill, and am in a monogamous relationship and all

This story is really popular around here since it's local, obviously - advertising the morning after pill like they were, I can understand the issue; however, advertising birth control and having that readily available is something I would firmly support. I'm not against the morning after pill at all - I actually think it's a wonderful idea, but I don't like the idea of people taking it on a regular basis - it should be a last resort type of thing, imo. Birth control should be accessible to anyone though.

They will give an abortion to a minor girl without telling her parents about it. That is irresponsible, showing absolutely no morals or values whatsoever, and is disgusting. That's why.

That has nothing to do with the name.

I would be willing to bet that Planned Parenthood has performed more unnecessary abortions than any other medical group.

what would you prefer a fucking coat hanger? That is a great organization.
I don't see the problem with the morning after pill anyways. Why is is considered such a bad thing?

Actually, whether or not to inform the parents is required is a state-by state thing. Each state has its own laws on whether or not that is required. In states where it IS required, you can be damned sure that Planned Parenthood conforms to the law. In states where it is not, how exactly can you fault them for FOLLOWING THE LAW?

Mindia... while you're looking up the definition of the word "oxymoron," you can look up the meaning of the word "hypocrisy." You never solved the mystery of that one, either.

It was a big topic of discussion in the news a few months ago. I'll try to dig it up.
