BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. Marines pushed north early Tuesday as they battled insurgents near the Syrian border, part of a force of about 1,000 troops aimed at rooting out insurgents and foreign fighters, the U.S. military said.

"Marines crossed over from the southern banks [of the Euphrates River] to the north and are now operating in the northern Jazira Desert and in pursuit of the enemy," the military said Tuesday.

Insurgents, including at least two suicide car bombers, attacked U.S. forces in Qaim about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of the Syrian border, the military said in a news release. No Marines were killed, the statement said.

Operation Matador began during the weekend in a bid to crack down on the violence in restive Anbar province, a huge swath of land extending from Iraq's western borders to towns near Baghdad.

Troops from the U.S. Army, Navy and Marines are trying to break down the network headed by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the military said Monday.

Al-Zarqawi, the most wanted insurgent in Iraq, is thought to be responsible for many of the bombings in Iraq and has declared himself an ally of Osama bin Laden.

On Monday, the military said it had killed at least 100 insurgents and foreign fighters.

Three Marines from the 2nd Marine Division have died in the fighting, two on Sunday and one Monday, the military said.

Three other U.S. Marines died Monday in combat in eastern Anbar province, the U.S. military said.

Two of the Marines were killed by an indirect attack during combat in Qarma, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Baghdad.

A homemade bomb killed the other Marine in Nasser Wa Salaam, just west of Baghdad, near Abu Ghraib prison.

Sounds good to me. I might think this war was a mistake in many ways, but now that we are there I certainly want us to succeed and Iraq to stabilize.

You mean long since time the hell the US got out of the mid-east and let them figure out who should run the country?

Anyone dying for something as stupid as W needing a "wag the dog" war to hide how bad the economy was when he took over (not necessarily his fault, despite his stupidity in general).

Not that Kerry was better, but at least he did not have an incentive to stick around and spend what, another $300 billion this year, fighting a police action in a country that does not want the Americans in? :umno:

Interesting... besides SEALS, what *ground* *combat* type sailors does the Navy have? Or, are they talking about the support roles of intel, aircraft and other?

I know very little about the Navy, which is why I am asking - never saw them in Iraq part 1.

It's the Marines god given right and passion to kill people. No single group is more proficient at it.

My friend took out about 10 the other day with a shoulder fired bunker buster.

Seabees are carpenters and bridge builders, no? They do a lot of underwater construction. That's what a Seal told me a few years ago. He said the Seabees build the bridges and then the Seals blow them up during their munitions and explosives training. heh fun stuff.

The corpmen, linguists, UDT, aircrew, and others are there.

No it's no joke. I USED to work at Hooters a while ago, back when I was in Euphoria. I used to live in the same area of Vonk... he came into the Hooters I worked at one time and tried to hit on me. Kept telling me that he could get an CoF (cloak of flames) if I'd go out with him... I *almost* fell for it - till I realized he'd already retired from the game and the guild (I was in Euphoria at the time).

Anyway, I'm now dancing at a strip club in southern Georgia to pay my way through college.

I had that picture of me (the one Vonk shows off) taken some time ago... I am even hotter now.

Not technically possible Lyion, since there were soldiers inside Iraqi borders...

Common sense Xao.

I was flying missions over Iraq and was doing work inside the borders, far beyond the U.S. Army.

That's still a silly claim to make. You can't have any idea how far various U.S. Army units penetrated into Iraq. There're still reams upon reams of classisified AARs from missions deep behind the "front" lines of conflict.

Let me reword for you since the common sense statement didnt apply, the ground troops in the US Army under Army control were MUCH farther out than I was. None of the Army operated anywhere near where we were working.

The ones who worked with SOC in theatre which was run by the Department of the Navy, were nowhere near us.

So, despite your nitpicking what I said was a simple truth. Feel free to play your nebulous 'coulda' card. We coulda found WMDs, too..
