looks as if in their infinate wisdom, the nhl has decided to put an end to the tie game. if there isnt a winner after a 5 minute overtime period, they go to a shootout.

i support the smaller goalie pads, goalies are lookin way too big.
how the hockey fans feel about this shootout thing? would it make some of you non-hockey fans more interested in watching if they got rid of the tie game?
personally i think its a joke. hockey and its fans are big time tradintionalists. hockey fell apart when they tried to modernize the game and mass market it. the shootout is exciting because its a rarity, they just keep on fucking this game up.

That's terrific news! I know all the tie games this season drove me nuts.

As long as they confine shootouts to the regular season I am all for it.
Anything to make the game more interesting is generally fine by me.
The things they HAVE to fix are the monster goalie equipment (which is a joke and finally being fixed), and the obstruction calls that are not being called. If they started to call the obstruction in every case we would have a better game.
Of course, all of this depends on them actually signing a CBA and playing again.

I do indeed concur whole-heartedly about the goalie equipment.
Shoot-outs are cool too.
Another great addition to hockey would be if they played it.

This point is moot right now since they're not playing at all.

they wouldnt be playing right now anyway, and as the article states when the next season of hockey starts up... the new rules take effect.
less comments on no hockey season, more comments on the upcoming season. which will be this year.

IMO it sucks. The problem is Americans tend to hate Ties. They changed Soccer in this country to eliminate Ties, now they are changing Hockey.
The American way. Higher Scores and clear winner/loser.
The equiment I agree with being smaller. Its just gotten bigger and bigger.

Well since the NHL is pretty much run by Canadians, I don't think this is an American issue, not to mention international hockey has shoot-outs to determine a winner in the event of a tie.

where are most the teams again?
there isnt really a market in canada except for the several cities that have the money to support a team. theyre trying to market it to americans, who really outside of the north/northeast (aside from a couple teams in the west) dont have much interest.
and i think euro hockey pretty much sucks. i dont like the idea of a shoot-out to break the game. i like 1-0 games, to me those are the most intense.

Hockey is popular in Canada, but it is run by Americans.
Note that both the shitheads in charge of this fun non-season, Goodenow and Bettman are high priced US sheisters out to maximize how much they can take from the fans and get away with it.
The biggest thing they should be talking about, other than making the game decent again (fucking neutral zone trap, grrr) is lowering the price so that it does not cost so much to see a game. I live in Toronto, home of the highest prices for hockey in the NHL by far. It costs $50-$350 per ticket plus $7 per beer and so on for other brutally prices concessions. I refuse to fork over $500 per game to see the Maple Leafs for one lousy night. Hockey, unlike the NFL, is NOT a special event and does not come close to justifying me paying as much as it would to go see a top end concert for the one time in 4 years of a huge rock band.
After the ticket prices they really have to crack down hard on obstruction calls. They got better last year, but as usual relaxed the calls late in the season and playoffs. If they let the good skaters play hockey there would be more flow, more offensive plays and more scoring. And, we would have a lot less crappy bad hockey players in the league (like the entire Minnesota team).
