New device gives women teeth where it matters

A rape victim once wished for teeth "where it mattered". Now a device has been designed to "bite" a rapist's penis. The patented device looks and is worn like a tampon, but it is hollow and attaches itself with tiny hooks to a man's penis during penetration.

"We have to do something to protect ourselves. While this will not prevent rape it will assist in identifying attackers and securing convictions," claims Sonette Ehlers, inventor of the device.

Not everyone, however, is convinced of its usefulness.

Lisa Vetten, of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) says: "It is like we are going back to the days where women were forced to wear chastity belts. It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape by wearing these devices.

'It is a terrifying thought that women are being made to adapt to rape'
"We should rather focus our energy on changing men's mindsets and behaviour towards women."

Ehlers, of Kleinmond, who has worked for the South African Institute for Medical Research, said she had been seeking a way to help women since meeting a rape survivor 20 years ago who commented that she wished she had teeth in her vagina.

"Over the past three years I have been working on this device. It is now completely safe and ready to be manufactured and distributed," she said.

It had been designed with engineers, gynaecologists, psychologists and urologists. It was "hygienic - no human hands will be involved in the manufacture".

In the event of rape, the device folds itself around the rapist's penis, attaching to the skin with microscopic hooks. It is only when the rapist withdraws that he will realise the device is clamped around his penis.

'He will have to be put under anaesthetic to have it removed'
"Its design will also go a long way towards lowering HIV infection as semen is contained in the device ... as well as preventing sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies," Ehlers says.

As it is impossible to remove the device from a penis without medical help, hospitals and clinics will be able to alert police when assistance is sought.

"This will rule out any possibility of the rapist's escaping arrest and speed up conviction."

If the rapist tries to remove the device, it will only embed itself further.

"He will have to be put under anaesthetic to have it removed. He will not be able to leave it as he will be unable to urinate."

A woman would have to wear the device every day.

"We never know when we might be raped. This device should become a part of every woman's daily routine, just like brushing her teeth."

Last year, there were 52 733 reported rapes. In a study, the Gender-Based Violence Programme at the CSVR analysed 162 rapes in Johannesburg's inner city and found that one in four had been a gang rape. The study found that 56 percent of the victims had been raped by two men and 23 percent by three.

Although Ehlers is optimistic that the device will go a long way towards reducing the high incidence of rape in this country, rape organisations are not so sure.

"Women would have to wear this every minute of their lives on the off-chance that they would be raped," Vetten says.

"I am concerned at how normal rape has become that we would even consider a device like this."

Chanaz Mitchell, spokesperson for the National Network on Violence against Women, says although it is a good idea for women to protect themselves, men should take responsibility for their actions.

"We still need to focus on men as perpetrators of this heinous crime."

Mitchell is also concerned that the device might lead to further violence against victims.

"Once the rapist realises this device is attached to him, he is more than likely to take his anger out on his victim."

Mbuyiselo Botha, spokesperson for the Men's Forum, said anything that could empower women should be welcomed.

"I would encourage my wife and two daughters to wear this device. It would send a signal to would-be rapists that they won't have it easy."

Ehlers intends launching the prototype next month.

"It will be available at supermarkets, chemists, anywhere where one would be able to buy tampons," she says.

The device is to cost R1 and also be available in bulk packs.

Hrmm, reminds me of some King Arthur humor.
***
King Arthur was getting ready to go on a Quest. He was worried about leaving his beautiful Queen Guinevere alone with all those lonely knights of the Round Table. So he went to his famous wizard, Merlin, for some advice. After explaining his predicament to Merlin, the wizard looked thoughtful and said to come back in a week and he'd see if he could come up with something.

A week later King Arthur was back in Merlin's laboratory where the good wizard was showing him his latest invention. It was a chastity belt... except it had a rather large hole in the most obvious place. 'This is no good, Merlin!' the king exclaimed, 'Look at this opening. How is this supposed to protect m'lady, the Queen?'

'Ah, sire, just observe.' said Merlin as he searched his cluttered workbench until he found what he was looking for. He then selected his most worn out wand, one that he was going to discard anyway. He then inserted it in the gaping aperture of the chastity belt whereupon a small guillotine blade came down and cut it neatly in two.

'Merlin, you are a genius!' said the grateful monarch, 'Now I can leave, knowing that my Queen is fully protected.' After putting Guinevere in the device, King Arthur then set out upon his Quest.

Several years passed until he returned to Camelot. Immediately he assembled all his knights in the courtyard and had them drop their trousers for an informal 'short arm' inspection. Sure enough! Each and every one of them was either amputated or damaged in some way. All of them except Sir Lancelot.

'Sir Lancelot,' exclaimed King Arthur, 'The one and only true knight! Only you among all the nobles have been true to me. What is it in my power to grant you? Name it and it is yours!'

But Sir Lancelot was speechless...

How about thinking of what will happen if a woman is actually raped while wearing one of these things. Now, I am not a man, but I have been a little rough with my teeth before, ad his first reaction was to hit me upside the head. Don't you think that a woman might be beaten because of this? And what about the gang style rapes? So it fends one of, what about the others? Who, again, would probably beat a woman to death?

That joke was hilarious.

Except again if you beat her to death, you still have to go to the hospital to get it removed. But instead of just rape, you now have rape and murder on you.

This thread and where we are makes me sad.

A couple things will happen. First, the people commiting thr crimes will just start to look for them first. Next some women will exploid it and use it to "set up" people. 3rd, at some point somone is going to get hurt from having this on, I mean hurt in a serious way, that person is going to sue, the company that makes them is going to be paying out a whole lot to that person, then others are just going to follow in his footsteps, evntually the company goes out of business due to lawsuites.

More or less, nothing has been solved. Rapes still happen, innocent guys are wrongly trapped by this thing and a company goes under.

Start giving women large amounts of C4 to place inside their Hoo Haw. When they get violated, they can turn from victim to suicide bomber. Better, if 3 guys are holding her down, she can wipe all of them out at once. This solves the population, crime, AIDS, and rape problem all at once.

Seriously, this is about Africa. The problem is rape is common there. They are looking at anything just to slow it's growth.

I don't think this is the answer, but given the lack of governments and accountabilities, what is?

They need to find a way for the punishment for rape is so bad that no guy would even consider it short of killing him. This of course is the hard part and would require gov'ts to be accountable for it.

Tough to do when in places like Sudan the Government actually funds the Janjaweed who are commiting the atrocities. Or worse, when there are places like Congo which have no law, good or bad.

Even worse, when we send in the UN to help, they commit rapes themselves and add to the problem versus the solution

So, either we accept tragedy and do nothing, or impose our imperialistic will and get ostracised in the world media. Although even a decision to act is a big question mark, as it was in Somalia.

How about girls don't put themselves in the position to be raped? It's not rocket science playing it safe and being watchful of your surroundings. But then again in Africa they don't have electricity so at night you can only really see big white teeth and eyes com ing your way, and the women are hanging out naked with body paint.

If a world-wide death penalty for rape was in effect and it reduced actual rape cases to a mere dozen or so, would you want it reversed even though it would mean rape cases would rise back to their current levels?

Also, are you opposed to people using deadly force on people who pose a legitimate threat to them? Including a person threated with rape?

This may be just me, but if I had the coice of being raped or being raped and then beaten to death, I would not choose the latter.

There are dozens of things that can be done to help prevent rape, I'm not going into it.

Given the vindictive nature of some people, if this device is inconspicous enough to avoid detection by a rapist, then it will likely go unoticed to a victim of of a setup or poor practical joke.

Also if it prevents urination then it would also have to prevent the transmisson of semen... which while a good thing, also takes away some possibly daming evidence. While I'm not very familiar with rape exams, I would imagine that semen would play a huge part as evidence.

I'd also be curious, that if this device is not noticable when it's attaching it's self, how effective will it be if a condom is used.

Weird what people come up with...

As far as the joke though, what I find sad is that all of those knights lost or maimed their pen0r...

Wouldn't you think the first knight to find out the hard way would have said something to the rest? Well, unless the first was Lancelot who was speechless, but then wouldn't you think the second knight would have?

I agree with the fact that something like that could get seriously misused. I'm also terrified that if I were to wear something like that (which I wouldn't but hypothetically speaking.) what if it malfunctioned and the barbs hooked me...the thought makes me  . I sense a lot of lawsuits if this becomes legal.

I just couldn't resist that, Harrison. You left it out there for someone to snag. I was only joking with you.
