Mother Explains Fatal Pit Bull Mauling

SAN FRANCISCO - The mother of a 12-year-old boy killed in his own home by one of the family's two pit bulls says she had been so concerned about one of the dogs that she shut her son in the basement to protect him.
Maureen Faibish said she ordered Nicholas to stay in the basement while she did errands on June 3, the day he was attacked by one or both of the dogs. She said she was worried about the male dog, Rex, who was acting possessive because the female, Ella, was in heat.
"I put him down there, with a shovel on the door," Faibish said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. "And I told him: `Stay down there until I come back.' Typical Nicky, he wouldn't listen to me."
Nicholas apparently found a way to open the basement door.
Despite her concerns about Rex that day, Faibish told the newspaper: "My kids got along great with (the dogs). We were never seeing any kind of violent tendencies."
Faibish found her son's body in a bedroom. He was covered in blood from several wounds, including a major head injury. No charges have been filed.
"It's Nicky's time to go," she said in the interview. "When you're born you're destined to go and this was his time."
Ella was shot to death by a police officer the day of the attack. Rex was taken to a shelter, but Faibish said she wanted him put down.
I'm not a parent, but that outlook on her son's mauling strikes me as, well, nonchalant.

What does it say about her as a parent. If you are so worried that you have to lock your child in the basement becasue you are afraid one of your pets is going to hurt him.
Seems like common sence to me that you would just get rid of the animal if you are that worried about it.
AS for why white trash like then, they have a rep for being mean dogs. So what happens is people who want mean dogs get them and treat them like shit. In general, very good loving dogs become bad dogs because they are treated like shit and then just enforce the idea that they are mean.

I'm a firm believer in that animals are going to behave based on the way they are brought up.
What the mother should have done is put the dogs in the basement and let the kid stay upstairs. From her actions and statements it seems like she cares more about the dogs than the kid.

He was 12, old enough to stay home by himself. If I were in the same situation, I would put the dogs in the basement or in another toom when I left.

BUT.... If this woman was so concerned about the dog harming her son when she was not home shouldn't she have just said "tough cookies you are coming to the store with me"?

Well that too Gidan, but I mean in the given situation if you had an animal and decided you would not give it up, wouldn't it make more sense for you to NOT leave your child alone with it?

Well yeah, if your going to keep the animal even though you know it is sucha threat to your child that you feel the need to keep your child locked up. I would think you would be smart enough not to leave your child alone with it.

I will not get into a discussion or argument with you, I just hope you know you are a fucking retard. Because its a pitbull its automatically the dogs fault I am sure, but think of this as well... Dogs protect their mates when they are in heat. Even the nicest dog will try to rip someone's face off when it is around a bitch in heat that it has claimed as its mate. If the female was in heat it wasn't a case of breed, but a case of some fuck nut not understanding that most basic principle. In that case, the above moron should not be allowed to own unfixed animals. I won't argue the breed principle, but I KNOW the above factor makes animals uncontrollably vicious.
Maybe they should look into the mother who left her child with an uncontrolled animal?
