Then they take a small vial along with the bag and test the small vial. If you have diseases you were unaware of or something is wrong with it, they'll chunck it.

They don't care if you smoke pot, just so long as you don't do drugs requiring needles.

If you have smoked pot in a certain time frame from then, you are not allowed, as the blood is tainted by pot or something. Goes for all drugs, which is why they ask if you do drugs recreationally, if you say yes, they ask when the last time was. If it was too soon, they deny you.

Traveling out of the country to places where Maleria(sp) is present will disqualify you for a calander year from the date you returned. Getting a tatoo or a piercing will disqualify you for a period of time as well.

Yeah, that sucked. I had to give exact locations and dates I was in each location in Central America over the past 3 years.

Took over an hour to compile the entire list and then they found out I had B+ instead of B- like I thought, so I couldn't do the double red cell machine and just gave regular blood.

I was also right on the border for staying in Great Britian for almost 3 months during the time frame the required. So I had to get my passport and verify =\

I got dormant Hep B in my blood that i was bor with, and while this harmless to me, aparently giving my blood to others might kill them.

If you feel symptoms of a cold or flu, contact your blood center and ask to reschedule your appointment for a few days later. Last time I gave blood I told the nurse I go into mild shock when I give it.

She said it was all in my mind, I disagreed. When I gave blood, go figure, I went into mild shock as I usually do (minor chills mostly, nothing big).

Since then I have not been back as I don't particularly enjoy going into shock, and they make it so I have to book a damn appointment to give blood in Canada these days.

Noone goes near me with a needle until I HAVE to when I'm pregnant or giving birth.

As part of the major I was planning on, I had to take a lot of hematology classes, and one of them focused intensely on blood banking.

And Darc, I'm not surprised they call you often if you have O blood, especially if it's O neg, because then you really *can* give to everyone (unless they have an incompatible sub type, like Duffy, or Kell, etc).

However, unfortunately for you, if you are O neg, you can *ONLY* receive from other O neg, which is why it's vital that they have some O neg in the bank.

I do know that they try to preserve O blood for O people, and use A or B whenever possible, but if you ever get the nerve, I highly encourage you to donate, since O blood seems to be in high demand.

One cool thing though, if you are going to be going in for a major surgery, and know about it in advance, you can donate your blood and have them freeze it to give to you for surgery, so you *know* it's compatable. =)

Sorry to side track the thread... just really enjoyed that class and it was nice sort of thinking about all the neat stuff about blood.

When I was going into surgery, the pre-op nurse said "Now, I dont want to freak you out anymore than you are but..." and continued to explain about transfusions. Anyway, I asked if it was too late to donate my own for transfusion, she said yup and I made a sadface.

I do donate when I can, when there is a blood drive around, I'll go if I am able.
