Ok I have finished reading/Listening to Stranger in a Strange Land for the 20th some odd time. I need new books. Anyone have any suggestions? And btw those of you that have not read Stragner in a Strange Land please pick it up after all these years the book still holds up and is a delight to read.

I just bought "100 people who are screwing up America" and "Winning" I just finished "Road to Surfdom" which I highly recommend (it's dry though, but I love political stuff like that)

I was thinking of "A million little pieces" that Ashly suggested in another thread but I have a younger brother lost in the world of addiction and am not sure I can read it.

so any of you read Stranger in a Strange Land?

My main thing is a friend once suggested that they should make a movie out of this book, my problem is i can see the following things happen:

1. To make it more 'PC' with the time Valetine Micheal Smith will become gay and lead a cult of gay people.

2. During the last part of the book where V.M. Smith is standing in front of the crowds....much like Runaway Jury they will edit it and instead of a angry mob of religous Zealots, it will be a branch of the NRA.

3. They will get some pnay in there to play V.m. Smith like Tom Hanks, for even worse Ben Afleck.

4. After reading the last book they made from the Heinlien series into a book (starship trooper) I am of the mind that the will scew this up too.

BTW speaking off the subject of Starship Troopers...did anyone know that there was a sequel to this already bad movie? Foudn a review online for it...got a chuckle over it so im gonna post it here.

Not since Adonal Foyle has 6 million dollars been more wasted. I generally sit through an entire movie no matter how terrible: see Mr. Wrong, but this movie pushed me to the breaking point. I fully understand that "we're in it for the species" and with the amount of fornicating in this film procreation seemed mandatory but the mobile infantry has to be good for more then just this. What would Rico think? I'm only glad that Flores and Lt. Ratjack didn't live to see this abomination. Starship Troopers 2 is a Species meets a massive pile of elephant crap. Every soldier is infected w/ a parasite and apparently the only method by which the parasite is transfered is w/ gratuitous sex scenes. I emplore the Federation to go back to Planet P, use Neil Patrick Harris to find the brain, and end this before we are cursed w/ Starshp Troopers 3. Please if you value your time and sanity avoid Starship Troopers 2 at all cost for watching the entire movie will leave you feeling like the enson from the SS Roger Miller after his encounter w/ a brain.

Too funny. This wasn't up when I looked at the thread a few hours ago, but I had just dug my copy out of a box my old books in my parents attic ten minutes ago, thought I should mention it here.

Think Hitchiker's Guide meets The Omen. Good stuff.

Charles Bukowski's Ham on Rye is next on my to-read list.

Just finished re-reading the first five Harry Potter books to catch me up for the 16th ;)

I think it'd do you a world of good to read it, for that reason especially. The book is great for you, because James Frey has his brother and a book he gave him to thank for helping him through it all. Try it =)

Assuming you're looking for some quality fiction...

Terry Pratchett: Anything, but especially the Night Watch series

Neil Gaiman: Neverwhere

Roger Zelazny: Anything, but the Amber series is generally considered his opus, if not his best creative work.

George R.R. Martin: The Game of Thrones series of course, but his older work is also quite good, you can definitely see Zelazny's influences. Check out Armegeddon Rag or Fevre Dream.

Glen Cook: The Black Company series is excellent, and his homage to Rex Stout in the form of the Tun Faire novels are entertaining and well-written.

Of course, Rex Stout himself is worth reading, along with Chandler and Hammett if you even remotely enjoy detective fiction. Hammett in particular was an amazing author, and Chandler helped define contemporary American literature. For a more modern take on Chandler, Robert B Parker isn't bad.

Elmore Leonard is worth reading if you enjoy character driven novels, despite the bastardization Hollywood has ruthlessly perpetrated on his work.

I like a couple of the John Irving books

"A Prayer for Owen Meany" being my favourite, but a close second is "The World According to Garp"

really kind of eclectic books, funny as hell

For some good Sci-fi you have to read Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game". Probably the best sci-fi story I've ever read. "Ender's Shadow" is good too, I really liked reading these 2 back to back.

I'm also a fan of the Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" series, but it takes a certain level of patience to read them (I'm sure Arlos will chime in now and mention you'll also need a certain love of angst too)

The entire Ender series is amazing. I also though Starship Troopers was a great book, the movie wasn't so hot.
