Anyone ever heard of a ping response of =!x[[]-z8$\\!~E@6 etc. etc. etc. with spades, diamonds, copyrights and happy faces etc... afterwhich command stops responding?

This is when I ping anything, even my ethernet card. The cards not busted, no hardware is busted. The only 2 things I've downloaded since this last reformat 3 days ago was msn messenger update and java 5.0 (which didn't install correctly). Oh and Windows XP security updates.

D-Link says "call comcast"
Comcast says "wtf?" but and told me how to reset my tcp/ip"
E Machines says "wtf??"

That is some wierd shit. I used the ping command on like, a thousand computers, and never got anything other than a ping time, or a timeout response.

First the person you spoke with at DLink is an idiot directing you to comcast but anyway. The people from Dlink, Comcast and EMachine should ALL have directed you to Microsoft as ping is installed with the OS. It has nothing to do with your network connection or your network card. 99% chance this is a software issue and about a 1% chance its hardware related, though if it was hardware you would be getting alot of screwy shit, not just that.

It looks to me like have a major corruption of your networking utilities in windows and possible a major system wide corruption though I doubt it. Being as this is a new install, the best option you have is another complete OS Reload. This was probably due to the Java install that didn't work but it may not be.

download an alternate ping utility and try that... If it works your OS is busted.

try this man. it might be a Winsock issue I have seen(wierd as it sounds) where a piece of spyware got in there and goobered up your return packet information.

We made my old EMachine into a TV box It's called PoSEM.

Winsock didn't work. I downloaded a different pinger and it worked. I suppose that means I'm reformating again. So what's so disgusting about eMachines? I'm not exactly proud of it, but for $700 w/flatscreen monitor + tech support this thing isn't bad.

EMachines actually are not that bad. The Hardware in them is sub par but for a cheap computer they are decent. EMachines are basicly hardware that wasn't good enough to get put in NEC computers but is still usable by the main stream computer user.

Anyway as to your issue. If downloading another ping program worked then the corruption may very well be limited to just the ping executable, probably not but its possible. The OS Reload is your best bet still being as the OS is so new on that machine anyway.

dont do a full wipe man. boot up to the xp cd and tell it to install the os. when it asks if you want to repair the exsisting operating system say yeh.

This might fix your problem with out losing all your shinitz.

I put the ping executable up for you to download. It should be located in your system32 folder under your windows directory. Backup the one that is there and replace it with the one you downloaded.

why waste time reformatting your computer over such a minor error... The new ping utility worked BAM problem solved.

Becasue more then likely its more then just that one file. He could spend the next year finding a file here and a file there that doesn't work. Why take the risk on a OS install that was 3 days old? He already stated he had installed next to nothing on it so with the cost of about 1-2hrs he could solve all teh issues and avoid possible issues in the future.

Of course that begs the question, why was the original install messed up, for instance if there is a problem with the cdrom data transfer it could cause more or different problems.
