The federal government plans to begin doling out debit cards worth $2,000 each to adult victims of Hurricane Katrina, The Associated Press has learned.

Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff descibed the plan in a conference call with state officials Wednesday morning. The unprecedented cash card program initially will benefit stranded people who have been moved to major rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome.

"They are going to start issuing debit cards, $2,000 per adult, today at the Astrodome," said Kathy Walt, a spokeswoman for Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

The cards could be used to buy food, transportation, gas and other essentials the displaced people need, according to a state official who was on the call and requested anonymity because the program has not been publicly announced.

I Dunno if giving out 2 k to people is the best way to make sure there needs are met. Poor people arent known for being the best financial planners and it doesnt take a lot of imagineation to think of ways this could go wrong.

And this is not a good thing? Shoot I'm not sure what the point of your post is Lyion. Cash is king and 2k isn't much money in this day and age. I won't make comparisons but suffice to say this is a drop in the bucket.

If half the people that get this use it wisely it was a good investment.

You know it's easy to have little faith if you suck the tit of the predominant media...when you learn to think for yourself, things become clearer. Forget what you think you know and consider, what would you do...those people aren't so different from yourself.

If you had just spent X number of days in the NO stuperdome, been moved to TX and are living in a cot city on the forty yard line...what you gona do with 2k$?...some will squander it yes... but I think most won't I think.

if youre living in in the dome on a cot and being fed, what exactly will you spend the 2k on? going to buy a bunch of possesions that will likely be stolen or lost when you move out of the dome? probably not, its going to be wasted. whatever though, im sure the local businesses around houston wont mind.

ROFL...did you actually just say Kahar blindly follows the media outlets? You really need to learn people's stance on things before blindly lashing out.

Yes I actually said that and if you or anyone else cares to provide more than heresay on the subject I assure you I will read it word for word. I don't think much of peoples reputations. They are often inflated and incorrect.

I could spend 2k in a week, first I would secure a job, that might cost me 100$ in transportation and paperwork. Then I would secure a place to live, for those of you that don't live in your mothers basements that will cost you at least 1200$

Then I might buy some 2nd hand furniture and food...I could spent 2k in a day if I was stuck in a stinking shithole like the Astrodome, but I'm easy, I know how to live below my means. I'm betting most of you spoiled arrogant middle class brats couldn't go a day without food and water.

You got alotta nerve, and very little good sense.

Let me imagine what the money will be spent on. I'm thinking....thinking....oh. Maybe booze and crack. Yeah, that sounds about right. And 3 people will buy new clothes for their kids.

Giving the people cash is a bad idea in my opinion. They're going to see it as fun money, with the red cross handing out all the food water shelter and salvation army giving out clothing and other essentials. They'll think, "why should I buy this stuff that I deserve to have provided to me by charity because I survived a hurricane." And piss it away.

On the other hand, after going what they've gone through, maybe they do deserve to piss away 2k on something enjoyable.

Either way, don't expect those debit cards to be buying anything more than allan iverson jerseys and liquor.

I'm willing to bet a lot of them were on welfare before the disaster and are well acquainted with ways to get around any limitations on the cards.

Giving cash is the worst idea ever. they need food, shelter, water, homes and clothes. get them that. with that, they can get jobs for money. set them up right.

Well, I'm hoping that you know that New Orleans was and has been for a long time a city where most of it's residents lived below the poverty line.

But those people still provided for their families, I don't know know what to call you right now. I don't know if you're a hardcore racist or maybe just a little troll. What I do know is that nothing you have said in this thread makes any sense with respect to what is happening now in the gulf states.

I hope you sleep well in you comfy middle class bed.

I'm sleeping on a futon right now that kills my back, actually.

I can't see how anything I've posted is racist. My comment was about how to support the victims of the hurricane. I think it would be in a way that would help them get their dignity and lives back. They need homes, food and clothing for themselves and their families. We can help them get jobs and put their lives back together...we have that ability. I realize they were poor, also. Yet, I'm suggesting we give them the proper elements in life for every person that lives in this country...food/shelter/clothing/jobs. they can make their livings again. the ones who didn't have one need to make one.

People who helped rebuild florida made so much money when it was over. Companies sponsored them, (you have to have money to rebuild) and along with assistance, people pulled together and rebuilt their homes/lives...etc. I know at least ten men who made probably over $100,000 for three months' work down there.

did you assume, that I'm a racist, because I don't think we should give black people money? because I didn't say that.

Seeing as Araby mentioned people from New Orleans and not Niggers with Attitude, you shouldn't have taken it personally. Racist.

Stupid racist. Stop polishing your guns, fucking your sister and reading the KKK pamphlets your inbred family sends to you for a minute and go to an urban area and see how people live.

I know its scary, being around black people and all, but you can do it, be brave.

I thought they were geting debt cards like a flex spending card so it is only useable on certain goods. I dont see the problem with this, we give people food stamps and some buy drugs and liquor with it some don't. Are there better things to do with the money. Let a % of people take the money and make a fresh, better start for themselves or their families for those that blow it and are stupid well then oh well

PS: I will sleep mighty comfy on my middle class bed (it is actually a very very nice bed maybe even upper middle class) , had I wanted to sleep on a lower class bed I would have dropped out of college and continued the coc and meth habit.
