Anyone got any suggestions?

I just picked up Shadow Hearts : Covenant, it is pretty cool. I played about 30 min into it and realized I need to go back and play the first one to better understand whats going on.

Each console has its own RPGs.

If you have an Xbox, you can get Morrowind and Fable.

Only FF i haven't played was X-2, mainly because I heard it was to much like playing barbie dress up.

Morrowind was decent but to open ended for my short attention span.

I was looking for less mainstream RPGs that I may have overlooked.

Rent Fable, do not buy it. You'll beat it in a weekend, and basically be through with it (unless you want to play back through as an utter saint/ evil bastard).

Personally, I played through as a goody-two-shoes, saved right before the final fight, and then finished it as a goody, and probably saved afterwards (you can play on after the end, if you like). Then, I did the final fight again, only this time making the evil choice, took my spoils, and went out into the world to terrorize the citizenry a bit. The best part (even better than almost effortlessly, and certainly mindlessly, slaying every last man, woman and child in the towns, was feeding taking them to the temple for sacrificing to Skorm for a very nifty bow :P
Here's a hint for you, if you have any left alive out there, Skorm really appreciates it if you sacrifice sidekicks, and they're much easier to herd through the temple in one piece).

Oh, and check out Knights of the Old Republic if you havn't already. KotOR2 is supposed to be pretty good, as is Jade Empire (although I havn't gotten around to either one yet). Those should last you a few days ;P

Front Mission 4 was pretty cool, if you like that sort of thing. Same goes for Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics.

There are a bunch of other rpg's out there I just never got around to trying: Star Ocean 2, Skies of Arcadia, Demon Stone, wasn't there a new Breath of Fire?, Dragon Warrior 7 or 8 is coming out at some point between now and x-mas... new Legend of Zelda was supposed to be out later this year, but I heard it got bumped to a spring release :/, Wind Waker's cool though, if you have a 'Cube).

I just wish someone would come out with a modern version of Baldur's Gate (sort of like NWN, only with a 6-person party, depth, and replay value~). Temple of Elemental Evil was so close, and yet so far away.

Wild Arms 3 on PS2 was fun, I would also echo the previous poster and say get Disgaea if you are into the strategy RPG.
I picked up Suikoden 4 for only 20 bucks and it was decent, though at some times rather boring.

Getting pretty deep into shadow hearts, its a pretty good RPG. Good story alothough some of the dialog dosent transfer over smoothly wich results in "All your bases are belonging to us" type conversations. The main hero is a horn ball and thinks about scoring with all the females in the story. it is a very linear game, but sometimes that is refreshing. I hate haveing to look for things to do, if I wanted to do that I would go outside. Only about 30% through the game, will update as I progess.

If you're a fan of Arc the Lad (not many people are, but hell, I liked it), then you may want to avoid the most recent one... it's more adventure RPG-ish than the series used to be... which isn't necessarily a bad thing, unless of course you were expecting an Arc game. I haven't given Star Ocean:Until the End of Time a shot yet... I hear it's not as good as Star Ocean 2 was, but that is (was?) a good series as well. Dragon Warrior 8 is going to be awesome, without a doubt. This is the first I've heard of a bump in Zelda's release, and I'm about to shed many tears over it. Baten Kaitos for GC is odd, with a card combat system... but isn't too bad. I hear the most recent Breath of Fire is hard as fuck, which is good. I wasn't a fan of Skies of Arcadia. If you're looking to be unbelievably frustrated, there's TBS (a la FFT) called Hoshigami for PSone... holy shit. Recently I've been leaning more toward translated SNES games though... I just miss that era I think.

Unfortunately my financial status has left me somewhat out of touch with recent console games.

Stella Deus, Or Iris Atellar are both fricking sweet under rated games that were below radar when they came out on the PS2..
