So honestly, what do you want to know? If Alliance players make up 68% or 68.8% of the population?
Taxx.. I don't think he wants to know anything. Any semi intelligent person would see and understand the value of statistics. Are they 100% accurate? Very rarely are they or can be, that's why stats are often accompanied by a margin of error calculation. So if he argues that stats are useless because they aren't 100% accurate then he is either missing some chromosomes or has nothing better to do but argue stupid things and look like a moron. Either way he's a moron.

There's give or take twice as many Alliance as there is Horde overall, and at pretty much any instance in time, a subset of that remaining in the same proportions is online

Tikker either way, both those stats are available to a certain extent, and are statisticaly valid IMO. You can get a total count and a exact time count. So I don't think thats what he wants.
I think what he needs is someone to hack into Blizzard database and pull the info on every single char that has been created. Maybe then he would shut his face up.
Sadly though this info well never be available for the public thus the census is best that we got, and since its pulled from in game it is accurate to a certain extent.

I dont know about your census, but my census counts everyone that is on, and then the next time counts all the new people that werent on the first census, and so on and so forth.
FOr Instance, Monday I do a census 1200 players are on. It takes down name guild, level, class, race
Tuesday there are 300 prople on, 200 were on the census from Monday, so it updates there information, and the other 100 are added.
And so on and so on
