AH Deposits

Post by Langston »

I can't seem to find an in depth description of the way the deposits in the AH work.

Things I've noticed about them:

- The higher the default (suggested) value of the item, the higher the deposit.
- The longer the auction, the higher the deposit.
- If your auction does not sell, you lose 100% of your deposit
- If your auction DOES sell, you lose part of your deposit

I haven't noticed any real similarities in how much money I receive back from my deposits on successful auctions. For example, I sold a dagger today for 6g. Of my nearly 1g deposit, I received back 7s. My payment that arrived in my mailbox was 6g7s. I lost nearly ALL of my deposit.

Things I've noticed that seem to have no effect on the deposits:

- Your buyout price
- How long it actually takes for the auction to close - full duration or buyout seems to make no difference on how much deposit you get back
- Raising the starting price of your auction above the default (suggested) price

Does anyone have any more info on this? It really irritates me that I can sell an item in 10 minutes (the dagger I mentioned above is a good example of this) yet still lose 90% of my deposit money.

I have recieved more money back from auctions the higher my reputation has gotten.
That may influence deposit price.

*bump*

Anyone else have any thoughts, perspectives, knowledge of this? Or do you ALL just vendor off all of your drops and never use the AH?

On the Horde side, not much sells. I don't bother auctioning unless I know something is going to sell.

Odd. I have no problem selling stuff.

What level items are you trying to sell? Pretty much any 40+ item sells on my server if priced appropriately.

I mainly just vendor it if it doesn't look like something "special"

By special I mean just a tad above vendor bought shit...and even then I usually vendor it out of laziness.

There's hardly anyone over 40+ on our server so it's a waste of time even bothering to auction stuff. I get 10 or so green items a night that would normally sell for 2-10g in beta that won't sell at all now.

Still? At this point in the game you should have a robust population of people over 40. I mean, the game has been out for over a month - and it didn't take THAT long to get there.

Is your server just full of suck players, or what?

How would I know, apparently my Census numbers are accurate since Orgrimmar has 40 people at most in it at peak playtime.

We could have 40 people just in the AH... let alone the bank, the inn, the trainers, and the tradeskill shops.

What's wrong with your server?

I love the server, nothing wrong with it that I see. We got the perfect population, maybe you guys have too much?

I wouldn't say we have too much.

I have no problems with things being over-camped/farmed to the point that I can't be successful. Rarely do I have to compete for anything I want to do. We have a robust economy. We have an active LFG population.

What would be wrong with that?

It sounds like you guys have an UNDERpopulation problem. Simply proven by the fact that an economy hasn't even developed yet. An active AH accomplishes two things: it allows for a flow of money to enrich players while at the same time it benefits the player base by keeping equipment in circulation... so you have a strong purchasing power and more capable characters (based on gear solely... can't help people if they just plain suck).

I'm sure it will grow eventually... I'm just kind of amazed that your population of high level folks is so low. I mean, really, it's not that hard to get to level 40....

I don't think I want a standardized economy on a server after 1 month. I love knowing i can go somewhere and not have to worry about another grouping camping the area. I don't think my equipment is suffering one bit...in fact I bet I'm in the top 2% of rogues in the game equipment-wise. Who really buys equipment at the AH other than the occasional epic? Our server is still listed at "High".

As I said, I don't have to worry about people camping an area either. People are constantly buying stuff from the AH that isn't "epic". If you don't, that's swell for you.

I'm not arguing that you have a low population overall - I'm saying it appears you have a very low population of higher level players. THAT is what amazes me.

*shrug* is there a high market demand for plate armor of the owl? I just don't see people bothering to sell anything unless it will actually sell...

What exactly do you buy from the AH other than the odd trade good?

The only thing that I personally buy from the AH is leatherworking patterns.

However, I sell green items all the time.

That's my point...most level 40+ people don't buy green items unless it's the perfect combination. Plate of the bear, Leather of the monkey etc.

I don't get level 20-30 items, any more, Taxx. I'm selling level 40-50 items. So, yes, level 40+ people DO buy stuff.

ANYWAY - back to the original topic of discussion:

Anyone have any more thoughts on the AH Deposits?

Here's a specific example:

Field Plate of the Something-or-other
- Open bid at 2.5g
- Buyout at 5.0g
- 24 hour auction
- Deposit - 36s
- Auction bought out in 30 minutes
- Deposit returned - 11s

So, I lost 25s of my deposit. Also, the deposit on this item was extraordinarily low for the item that I was selling. Typically a 24hour auction for an item that will sell for a few gold (in this case 5g) is around 1g. Why was this one so low and why did I only get 30% of the deposit back? It makes no sense.

Clearly people:
A) Don't care
B) Don't know
C) Know to ask technical question on the actual game forum to get a dev to answer the question
D)Know that if you understand how the deposits function or not it won't change the amount you pay. If you don't like what you pay choose a different fricken option or don't use the AH.

Anyone have any actual THOUGHTS on this. You know - the ones where you actually get electrical current to cross the synapses to form an idea? We've already had the "other stuff" taken care of now (Thanks Freon! *thumbs up*).
