no

and

people make too big a deal over the differences in pet dmg/armor/health

i prefer a pet with fast movement speed, so i have king bangalesh, he's that 43 elite cat in STV. he moves as fast as a mount and is 1.4 atk speed

the runners in feralas are even faster than him, too

there's also snarler in feralas, who has 100 to all resists, but he's really rare and is perma-camped, and has no speed bonus

A few things to consider while picking a pet, what tradeskills do you have?
If you're a dragonscale leatherworker there are a couple pets you can get that will help you big time, with certain resists to farm the dragons with.

If not, get a Turtle, a bear, and a cat/bird.

Turtles can tank like no other.

Bears are all round, can use claw bite and growl, have nice defense and do some nice dmg.

Cats/birds can use all 4 abilitys. Being Claw, Bite, Growl, and for some reason i can't think of the last one. It's a aggro reducer. You can get them from the starving mountain lions north of Hillsbrad, or birds. Basically for slackass tanks.

I used a raptor for ages, and around 40 I tamed one of those ironfur bears in feralas.

My raptor, even though I was almost fully invested in pet talents, was just getting shredded. It was sad. The bear was/is a much more capable tank (plus, it's a frigging garbage disposal on legs. It will eat pretty much anything I give it).

Now that I've respec'ed to Marksmanship talents, and have like none of the old enhancements (10% more hp/ armor talents, which I plan on buying back eventually), my bear still tanks about as well as the raptor ever did.

Of course, with all the extra damage I do now marks spec'ed, the mobs seem to be a lot less interested in my pet (critting like a mad bastard > growl), so I guess it's something of a moot point now :P

the pets are so boring, bland and really don't have much to seperate them, just find one that looks neat to YOU, and go with that

I use "The Rake" elite level 8 cat near TB. Have had him since I was level 10 an dwill probably keep him forever. I tanks well, has a 1.2 atk speed and runs fast enough for me. He eats fish and meatm which is fine for me. When I get low on good I simply fish for more, cook it and he is set again. I have an empty stable slot for training pet skills until I am high enough and get lucky enough to pick up snarler, at that point I will probably bounce betweent he 2.
For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

The best tank pet is a bear. I used one from level 10-52. That thing could hold aggro better than most tanks, and it absorbed damage extremely well. It has the most hit points of any pet in the game, and only the turtle has higher mitigation. While it is true that a turtle can absorb slightly more physical damage, the bear does better absorbing spell or mixed damage, and the bears claws give it some nice first-contact aggro that the turtle lacks.

The best DPS pet is a cat. I used one from 52-60. Simply stated, the cat does about 20% more DPS, which means about 10% more aggro (growl aggro is about half of pet aggro and would be the same in both cases). I picked up the cat to use in groups for DPS when there already was a tank. The next closest DPS pet is a raptor, but when comparing DPS "best" is very straightforward.

I switched because my (mark speced) DPS got so high that the bear was sometimes having trouble holding aggro, the little bit of extra damge the cat did made a significant difference. When soloing, I generally killed the mobs with plently of health left on the bear or cat, so their total hitpoints was generally irrelevant, and the bears mitigation was only a few percent better.

Right now, I have the cat at 60. I am waiting for a chance to pick up a warg to learn bite8, then I'll pick up a 58 bear to level up to 60 so I have a tank option in the stable. And I am levling up a Snarler (currently 45) to have a resist pet for raids.

Hope this helps!

The Rake is really the best pet you can have at low level, he is level 10 speed 1.2 run at 140% can dish nice DPS and is a fair tank. I agree Bear are very good pet as the tank very good, can substain alot of dmg as the have high HP (at low level it really make a diffrence) and have claw. Bear eat almost anything, still i prefer The Rake having done 2 hunter, one 21 (elf with bear as pet) and 31 (Troll with The Rake). All have different style/reason for there pet, you need to try out what fit you the best.
