ABIT VT7 Board

Postby DangerPaul » Sat Jan 29, 2005 9:59 pm

I cannot get it to recognize my second stick of memory. I have 2 Centon Electronic 512MB PC3200 memory sticks and the machine only sees 512MB. Anyone know what I am missing either in a Window's setting or BIOS setting to make it recognize the second? I have tried every combo of location in the 4 slots, and nothing. Anyone got any ideas?

Bad stick of RAM?

Did you try putting the second one in by itself to see if it sees it?

Oh, so update.

I added 2 256MB sticks in slots 2 and 4, I now show 1.5GB of memory, however, if I pull them back out, and leave the 2 512MB sticks in, it only will show 512mb.

That's fucked up, out of all the problems I have had with Ram...I've never heard this one. (thought maybe you had windows ME or 98 that won't show over 512mb)

You didn't get matched RAM. RAM has a rate (or something) to it. You can't run 2 and 3 together but you CAN run 2 and 2.5 and 3 together because it forms a chain.

ALSO, some boards have funky layouts. My MSI manual says if I ever want to put in a 1g stick it has to go in between 2 other sticks or some other funky setup like that.

Yeah, I'm low on details. Get Kahar to explain it to you better, he's the one that told me. :)

Both are Centon 512MB PC3200, I am telling you, something is fucked up. Newest thing is, Windows will just restart whenever the hell it wants.

Does your computer power down, or does windows itself just restart?

If your computer is powering down I would check your PS before anything.

OR something is overheating (CPU) and it is powering down to prevent damage.

I checked system temperatures, typically my CPU is around 145-153 degrees, system shutoff should be around 185 degrees for safety, I would assume anyways. When I start back up, Windows gives you the error reporting message that you click to send, saying there was a catastrophic failure.

It doesn't sound like there is an issue with the CAS rating on any of the ram.

But then again, I don't dick around with that shit anymore... I just buy preconfigured systems and optimize the drivers.

ABit mobos are ass in my experience anyways. Granted, my last experience with them was four years ago... and three dead mobos =\

I was in a pinch, I also quit building my own machines a while back. However, I had 2 die on friday night, and needed to get one up and running on saturday, because I am impatient. I could either go to the Chinese place down the street that sells shit with a 7 second warranty with no english on the box or Comp USA, those were my only two choices on a Saturday. I chose Comp USA and was at their mercy on parts. :ugh:

Do you smoke around your PCs?

Second hand smoke is worse on PCs than people.

Don't get me started you prick :p

yeah, 2 of us in the same room chain smoking around the PCs. The first one the processor died, the second one was weakened from heat stress and smoke and what not, decided to weaken the MB too much, and I snapped the processor off trying to put it in the other machine.

On top of the smell I don't let people smoke in my room for that very reason.

You aren't corroding my hardware because you're too much of a pussy to quit.

Seriously look at your fans, I'm willing to bet the crusted on dust has literally eaten away at the blades making it look like a rodent chewed on them. And this is fucking metal sometimes that will look similar but to a lesser extent.

First, its my house, so I do what the fuck I want.
Second, no, the fans were not corroded, they were dusty with a little bit of nicotine residue. Do not ruin my thread about my computer by turning into a smoking thread, or I will bring my chain smoking ass to your house and beat you up. =p

No I was being serious, buy some filters (cut them to size and put them in front of the fans) and prolong the life of your hardware.

I'm sure you know what kind of filters I am talking about.

My fans all exhale, not inhale, a filter will not help. I would have to seal all the joints on the case to do it, and honestly, I am not worried about it, I get 2-3 years a mahcine, unless I start tinkering with it.

I've lost one PC in 20 years. My Buddy who smokes loses em often.

Might want to look into better ventilation/containment, if you need to smoke around them.

I wasn't being judgemental, Paul. I was just trying to help, mon.

p.s. No smoking holy wars here, please.

The new house, in 2 months or less it won't be an issue. I am making my house a test house for a new whole home air purifying system that has fresh air intakes constantly pulling out the air in the house and bringing fresh in. There is several that are near where the computer will be drawing all that out.

But, yes I am aware what smoking does to my body and my electronics, I am too stubborn to stop though.
