Seriously though, what junkies have you ever seen that have held down jobs. And I mean real jobs that require a non-burgerflipper. Do you see a lot of crackheads managing a successful business? Is that heroine junky working out as supervisor of hazardous waste management?

Oh, but they got the McDonalds market covered. As well as the contruction sites and boat yards.

hehe, seriously, how many junkies do you know? I bet you might know a few and not even be aware of their addiction because they seem like well adjusted people.

Look at the entertainment business... while mostly a bunch of fuckups, there are plenty of very rich and successful junkie/addict artists, performers, actors etc.

Well, let's see - one junky I know of was a pharmacist until he got busted for stealing pills.

Another junky I know delivers pizzas now after years of jumping from job to job.

Another junky I know is a successful waiter at a classy shithole of a resturaunt and blows his money on pills and weed.

My friends x-wife was a crackhead with a low income job and pawnd my friends posessions one day to buy a shit load of crack and skip town, leaving him to take care of their 2 kids.

My father owns a seafood business and a diesel repair service. The docks are crawling with junkies of all sorts. All of them got hand outs from the government when the hurricanes came through. Otherwise they are committing other insurrence fraud, even going so far as to physically damage themselves in horrible ways just to claim it was the fault of the land owner or some other bullshit.

Yes, I also know a few people that are successfull, but pop anxiety pills. But it is much more common to see a failure junky than a successful one. I wouldn't necessarily classify my friend as a junky though, as he does have severe ADD, Clinical depression, and severe anxiety. The only thing he CAN do is pop his pills that are medically perscribed for him by a shrink.

I know many loser junkies as well... my point was, you can be an addict and still maintain a normal life. Same with EQ...

I wouldn't call that person an addict though. They have control of their life, and their life doesn't revolve around their habbit.

We are going round and round here.

Ones life does not have to be "out of control" in order to be addicted to something. A "devastating addiction" would be one that has completely consumed someones life to the point of not being able to function in society.

Two definitions of addiction:

Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance: a drug used in the treatment of heroin addiction.

The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something.

I was addicted to EQ and it was unhealthy, but like Toss noted it didnt destroy my life. It just wasted an assload of my time.

Addictions are generally bad, but not always devastating.

one of my x girlfriends got into speed, then heroin, then internet porn, then stripping, then became homeless..

in the aftermath of my mmorpg addictions i really dont think u could compare a drug addiction to a computer game addiction.. the games might destroy your social life but it doesnt quite destroy your entire life like -some- addictions can..

Personally, I played because I loved playing
not because i needed to, or did so just out of habit

It's kind of funny, on my home network I've been running MRTG for a couple of years now (yes I'm a geek, but it's an extension of my work, etc etc)

Looking at the MRTG graphs I can tell exactly when I was logged in, and for how long, etc etc

going back thru them it's fairly easy to correspond the bandwidth used to which expansion we were on, how much fun I was having etc etc

kinda scary~
