No, it's just your opinion.

A baby is not an appendage.

Actually, it more-or-less is until it's viable. It's wholly dependent on the mother's body to keep it alive. As such the law pretty much considers it (a fetus en ventre sa mere) as an appendage of the woman's body. Canon law, for example, for almost two millenia, did not consider abortion prior to 'quickening' (roughly, early third-trimester) to be wrong or immoral.

Ending the bodily functions of someone already dead by all accounts is murder but killing a baby with a working brain, thoughts, dreams, feelings...is not?

It's a fetus. It's the woman's choice to carry it to term or not. Once it reaches viability, of course, abortion is not permitted by most jurisdictions or by the AMA. I'm not familiar with the studies showing a first-trimester embryo has 'thoughts', 'dreams' or 'feelings'. I doubt you are either, but then, when did such trivialities as actual data hamper the great gift to the moral sciences, Finawin the Modest?

100% illogical moronic bullshit spewed forth by selfish cunts with no morals.

Well, I can understand you're concerned since any woman who found she was pregnant by you would probably break the land speed record running for the coathanger in the closet, but then again, with your personality being involved, it'd have to be at least date-rape in the first place, so she'd be entitled. I suggest you do everyone else a favor and cut your balls off, and spare all women the risk, and then you can award yourself some kind of tin-plate medal for reducing the need for legal abortions in the USA, in between sessions of shaving between your eyebrows and wiping the drool from your slack lips. How you find the time to post is no small wonder, in fact. Drool-proof keyboard?

Holy shit(no pun intended), the vatican supported killing babies AND people...I don't give a flying fuck what canon law said for 2,000 years and I highly doubt you do either. Stop using impertinent information simply to support your bullshit claims.

Wow some random canadian with no medical background says a baby is actually in-fact an appendage!!! IT MUST BE TRUE!!!

My post earlier was no personal attack on anyone specific. Thus making such an attack not at all personal...(I know you have difficulty understanding the basics of the english language so I elaborated for your benefit)

Actually, child, I have done undergraduate and graduate work in medical bioethics. My M.Sc. degree was in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Toronto. I researched and wrote several essays on abortion and biomedical ethics as part of my coursework.

You, on the other hand, failed to finish high school.

You're what, 20 or something? I was doing research on abortion law and history when you were still puking up your formula. You've got a long, long way to play catchup before you should be thinking about ridiculing anyone else's knowledge of the subject, least of all me.

Harrison - All personal feelings aside if you want to look at it in the harshest definition possible, until a baby comes to term it is nothing more than a parasite. It is dependant on taking what it needs to survive from the its host. That does not make it any less viable for someone to love their unborn child or to feel strongly about abortion. But until a certain point, a baby is not an independant life, that is medically undeniable.

I think it's great that our Congress is stepping up to the plate yet again to take on more responsibility of our lives. Obviously, local doctors and family members are much too close to the forest to see the trees. Our respresentatives in DC are gallantly stepping in not only to save this woman, but to insure the citizens of our great country that our government has authority over every personal aspect of our lives and is always looking out for our best interest even if we do not know what those interests are.

I love run on sentences.

Bush is awesome. I agree with almost every decision he has made so far in office. Not every decision... but most of them. The fact that he signed the legislation past 1am further shows me what a good heart this man has and that he is looking out for the best interest of moral decency. :boots:

If her wishes are to be allowed to die then who the fuck is ANYONE to question them?

This case is so simple it's not funny, yet people are making it into a future "trial of the century" and for what?

She's brain dead, she's not going to recover, PERIOD. Allow her to die with some fucking dignity and put this *issue* to rest once and for all.

For Christ's sake - this country has no problem with zapping a murderer, but can't for the life of itself allow an already *dead* woman some fucking finality.

OF COURSE the parents think they're smarter than the doctors and all the science indicating the unlikelyhood of any resemblence of a recovery... they're her parents.

What needs to be done, SHOULD be done out of the benefit of the patient NOT to satisfy the selfish inclinations of her relatives.

The *state* has NO, ZERO, NONE business legislating an INDIVIDUAL'S right to live or die. She has made it clear that she would not have wished to be allowed to exist in a condition like this, yes? So, what's the fucking problem?

Moral decency? Where is the decency in keeping her soul imprisoned?

Guess Bush's plan backfired. The judge ruled to NO put the feeding tube back in. While I don't agree with it, maybe this woman can finally get some peace.

My only issue with this is that they can't use a more humane way of letting her go. Dehydration and starvation are not "humane". Whether or not she has higher brain function is of little import... this is still a human being with some low level of mental faculty. We can treat her with more respect than just letting her dry up and die after a few days.

THAT is my moral dilemma with this whole issue.

I wouldn't have an issue with that as long as it was at the request of the patient via Living Will or other verifiable sources - or in this case, a common sense resolution.

The problem is, they're not talking about shooting her up with morphine... they're talking about pulling the feeding tube out and waiting till she dies from it.

IF the Congress and President were holding up this procedure in an attempt to enact a policy by which we could have her pass away in a more respectful and humane manner, then I would be 100% behind them. However, it doesn't appear that's the case, does it.

<i>Weary after an emotional visit with his wife, Schiavo said he is astonished that politicians want to interfere in such a private matter.

"Instead of worrying about my wife, who was granted her wishes by the state courts the past seven years, they should worry about the pedophiles killing young girls," Schiavo said, referring to a local case. "Why doesn't Congress worry about people not having health insurance? Or the budget? Let's talk about all the children who don't have homes."

He said U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who is leading a charge to extend Terri Schiavo's life, is a "little slithering snake" pandering for votes.

"To make comments that Terri would want to live, how do they know?" Schiavo said of the members of Congress who want to keep his wife alive.

"Have they ever met her?" Schiavo said. "What color are her eyes? What's her middle name? What's her favorite color? They don't have any clue who Terri is. They should all be ashamed of themselves."

Schiavo said he was going to stay at his wife's side through the entire ordeal and said he wouldn't back down in his fight to have her wishes carried out.

"Terri died 15 years ago," Schiavo said, referring to the collapse and cardiac arrest that doctors say virtually destroyed her brain. "It's time for her to be with the Lord like she wanted to be."</i>
