PS2 is a different story...
XBOX is essentially a glorified computer in a pretty box.
Ninja Edit:
PS2 has a hard drive/Linux package you can get, so legally you can get something like the above done. Which means you turn your PS2 into a computer for the most part.
If I remember correctly a PS2 is a 500MHZ processor and I forget the specs on its video processor...I could be wrong about the 500mhz *shrug*

How do you like this spoiler, motherfucker? -Lyion
Used Xbox = $100 or less. That's pretty cheap for what you can do with it. I bought a friends slightly used box for $100 and it still has 2+ year warranty on it. I took my old one and modded it. So far I have backed up all 20 of my games and I still have like 70GB of space left on it. Playing games directly off the hard drive is sooo much faster than loading from DVD.
There are some pretty cool homebrew apps out there for it. Tons of different emulators and media players.

I remember a story a while back when PS2 first came out. Sadam was buying vast quantities of PS2's to mod them into a poorman's grid-supercomputer.
Here it is:

"Liberals believe government should take people's earnings to give to poor people. Conservatives disagree. They think government should confiscate people's earnings and give them to farmers and insolvent banks. The compelling issue to both conservatives and liberals is not whether it is legitimate for government to confiscate one's property to give to another, the debate is over the disposition of the pillage."

Hahaha. I remember that shit.
No wonder his army sucked so bad. They should have been using XBox's to guide their nukes.

I've got a v1.0 Xbox with an Xecutor Pro 2.3 mod chip, added in a 120gb seagate drive and I'm using the UnleashX dashboard system and p1mp blue startup sequence (instead of green). I can play DVDs without the add-on pack from M$, have several games copied to the drive which I can play direct from the dashboard, and there's a lot of room to grow.

software hack = large font exploit with 007 nightfire or something right? I remember reading about it. Seemed fishy to me when I saw it but some folks swear by it.
I think it's covered in some detail on the link I mentioned earlier, there's another thread somewhere on the forums on http://www.copying-xbox-games.com

Go to the forums there and absorb the knowledge. There is a ton of shit you need to shovel through to get to the good stuff but everything you need is there.
Basically. some brilliant folk made a Mechwarrior and 007 save game that when launched, runs some code that reboots the Xbox and loads a custom dashboard. Once that dashboard is loaded, the XBox is wide open. You can FTP in to it like a PC and have complete control over the OS and file system.
It's brilliant.
