or fascism?

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism -
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Check

2. Disdain for
the Recognition of Human Rights -
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Check

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats
as a Unifying Cause -
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Check

4. Supremacy of the Military -
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Check

5. Rampant Sexism -
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.

Check

6. Controlled Mass Media -
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

Check

7. Obsession with National Security -
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Check

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined -
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

Check

9. Corporate Power is Protected -
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Check

10. Labor Power is Suppressed -
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.

Check

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts -
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.

Getting there

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment -
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Check

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption -
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Check

14. Fraudulent Elections -
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I guess that depends on your view of recent elections

Some of the points are valid criticisms - I think libertarians like Lyion would agree the current administration has a terrible record on trampling peoples constitutional rights. Likewise the Bush obsession with secrecy, it's beyond anything Nixon would have done even.

Some are somewhat silly - Bush is funding the military not because he wants to use the military to control the US, but because he wanted to invade Iraq and to channel money to his friends in the defense inductries. It's corporate welfare.

I don't see any criticism of his regressive tax policies where the majority of his tax cuts go to the wealthy while cutting services for the poor. Plus his massive enduring budget deficits are even getting Greenspan to complain.

So some of that is true - his fetish for bringing religion into government; and some is just silly. Mind you the idea of having religious headcases like Mindia running your government ought to scare the piss out of normal Americans.

Show me where Bush has exercised some "fetish for bringing religion into government", please.

Operating under his moral code is 100% different than instituting a state religion.

Quit with the bullshit, already, Rust.

That and his shameless involvement in the Schiavo case.

There's two for starters.

Look, dipshit, you have a lot to learn about politics and world affairs before you call anyone else 'uneducated'. Go back to jacking off to Fox News, they're aimed down to your level.

Are you SERIOUSLY criticizing the President for social programs such as those? I mean, really, are you THAT FUCKING STUPID!? My god, Rust, you REALLY need to wake the fuck up.

The Schiavo case isn't a good example - since the opponents are using their arguments based on THEIR beliefs as their basis, as well. There is nothing BUT a moral question there.

Rust - your rhetorical claptrap is growing boring. Please bring some substance to your messages or I'll start to regard you as a simpleton like Mapp who does nothing but lash out mindlessly with the latest Anti-Bushism. You appear to be an intelligent person - start THINKING instead of LINKING.

I rhymed! I'm a poet!

lets see

1. Wrong... i don't see Bush out there or any conservatives atm wrapped in the US flag.. those that say they are .. are those that hate america and hope for its downfall and supported the Soviet Union's Communisim.

2. Every single president has done this.. clinton signed the order to send terror suspects to Arab countries to be tortured instead so we didn't do that. Remember a democrat putting innocent people into internment camps in the thousands?

3. Democrats treat republicans as worse enemies than Terrorists.. they call us racists, bigots etc. Eventho they themselves wish to remove homeless, blacks, gays from our country but in a disguise of caring about them (look at Civil rights votes, and how they removed homeless so clinton could build his library)

4. less than 10% goes to the military.. so much more in spent in failing social programs. Aka not disporportional

5. Yea.. lets see... about half the women in the US voted for Bush, and the 2nd most powerful BLACK person (clinton didn't even have one in his cabinet) is a woman.. aka one of the most powerful in the nation. Not including a couple other women on the cabinet.

6. 99% of the media is liberal.. aka how can bush control it. If he had control.. why isn't CBS, NBC< ABC, CNN all shut down or killed? Just cause more people watch Fox now than CNN by 3 or 4 times ... doesn't mean Bush controls it. Have you even read the NY times and LA times AT ALL? its all Bush is the anti christ.. so thats a arguement of complete retardedness.. maybe we should pull the plug on you just for stating this.

7. Yea was FDR a facist?

8. hasn't happened and will never happen. Until the bishop of maryland is the president and the church controls the US government.. which actually liberals should want.. would mean NO WAR EVER, then its a moot point. Seeing as you completely misunderstand the amendment.. it says the federal government can't say ok Catholicism is the national religion...states can decide that.

9. how did the boom in clinton's admistration happen? Corporations made money and were protected to a point... when he started to take those protections away they went in the toilet, aka Enron and Worldcom. And i still don't get the obessiong about EVIL CORPORATIONS.. its called capitalism asses.

10. They don't have power cause they lose members cause of what they do and say. When you threated to kill, hurt others that aren't in unions, when you try to threaten all the time.. you lose power. This is their own faults. Unions help their members.. but destroy business, which in turn screws their members.

11. You mean Churchhill that considers those who died in 9/11 as nazi's? Those intellectuals. Did you kno Condi Rice has more degrees than anyone in the house or congress.. can speak more laguages.. wow guess she isn't an intellectual.

12. Lets see .... how stupid ...... give me one overstepping the constitution the cops use. FBI and CIA have always overstepped the constitution.. its their job to get shit done. the Cops always get evidence throw out cause of it.

13. lets see.. EVERY SINGLE PRESIDENT has used friends in their cabnit

14. show me how any election was fraud when bush was elected. Both times he got more of a % than clinton. Is clinton a fraudlate president? I love this arguement cause people are so stupid about it i laugh at them. There is no view.. there is law and those that decided to disregard it to win elections (aka democrats in florida/new mexico/ and others in 2000, and in 2004 Ohio and Florida)
