Could someone please explain to me how to shrink a picture I'd like to use as an avatar? I've figured out how to link to an off-site picture and all, but it's too big

Find your own host to support the picture, open it up in some picture editing suite, shrink that fucker down, maybe even drop the quality to help with bandwidth. And then upload it to your host and link to it in the same way you would if it wasnt your site.
