We were having issues with comcast too til I figured out what was going wrong and fixed a work-around from our end. What was happening to us was that Comcast was passing out bad DNS server information, which meant you could get anywhere you wanted if you used the IP address directly, but you couldn't get anywhere if you tried to go by name. Obviously the servers they were pointing people to are fucked.

For various reasons, I'd had cause to record the DNS server information we had gotten from Comcast in the past, and had set my PC up as a static IP behind our router, mainly so I could forward ports for BT to my machine, cause of WOW downloads. Anyway, one day recently, both housemates' DNS breaks. So, after research, I go look at the DNS information our router had gotten from Comcast and was passing on to us, and neither address in its table matched the old DNS information. So, went to both housemate's computers, set DNS to manual for the first 2 server addresses, and that fixed it, and simultaneously made us immune to further cases of the same issue.

If you don't mind some potential name lookup lag (no clue where these servers are geographically located), you could try the same work-around. The servers I know work are: 204.127.199.8 and 63.240.76.198. Just go into your TCP/IP properties and put those in there, and see if you suddenly start working again.

We had an outage last week - and now today - I called to bitch and they said they were having a nationwide issue with their DNS servers...

Maybe due to something malicious?

I've been very unhappy with Comcast. Not only with the outages, that the rest of you are reporting, but with their "customer support" in general.

There was an issue with a bill I had from December 2004, where I paid it but for whatever reason the payment didn't register with them. After NUMEROUS phone calls to both Comcast, AND my bank, and being told about 5 different 'procedures' I was 'required' to follow, it finally just NOW got cleared up. In April. 5 months later.

I have nothing but a seething hatred for that company.

We won't get into their full blown lying to customers.

"Are you guys having a problem in our area? or should I continue trying to fix something on my end?"

"Oh no we're experiencing nothing in your area."

I call around to friends to see what's up...They're all down too

"Hey I just talked to 5-6 other people who are also all without connectivity. Are you sure you're not having a problem?"

"Oh...well...ummm...we're having difficulties in your area as a matter of fact"

Fucking bitches.

A somewhat amusing story:

I work for Charter Communications, but I live in a Comcast area. This sucks, because if I did live in a Charter area, I would get all of my cable services, up to and including DVR, for free. *drool* But alas, such cannot be. Anyways, I digress.

My boss needed to change some of her services, so we thought it would be fun to call Comcast on speaker so we could all listen in and see how her "customer experience" went and gauge ourselves against them. Wow, they sucked. By the end of the call, my boss and the 5 people listening in were all involved with this call, telling the CSR what they should be doing and saying. I think the poor guy was about to cry.

Good times.

Hey, if you ever have issues with your internet and/or cable modem and call in, you might get to talk to me!

Well, if you live in Northern California, Oregon, Washington or NW Idaho and select parts of Nevada.

Ugz and I have both Comcast Digital cable/ internet and the Phone service through them. I am sorry Darc, but be prepared for frustration. The cable service is as crappy as described above, and our phone isn't much better. Cheaper than using, say, MCI or something, but every so often our phone will just cut out. It's not our *phone* either, it's the service, because we have tried all the various phones in our house and all of them will drop conversations with no warning.

I had Charter when I lived in Minnesota and was pretty happy with them.

On the plus side, though, I have never had a single issue with Comcast's Cable TV service, just the internet and phone.

Like I said, I've never had a problem with the cable tv part... as for the internet... I've only had two outages (that I can remember being longer than an hour) and some slower download rates over the past couple of weeks... other than that, I've never had a problem with them.
