Cervical Cancer

Postby Shannan » Wed Apr 13, 2005 9:06 pm

Has anyone read the info or seen the news reports on this? I have heard that this is now traced back as Sexually Transmitted. I tried to surf some info but, of course, comcast is having suck ass issues.

Yup, but not sure how many people will immediately recognize what HPV stands for.

Quick and dirty, HPV = human papilloma virus= viruses that cause warts.
In this case, it's the strains associated with genital warts you'd be concerned with.

There seems to be an increased risk involved with tobacco use, and is especially high in combination with HPV infection.

retracting the smegma comment: did a little looking around, and couldn't find anything conclusive either way. There seems to be two camps on the subject, and they're rather antagonistic of each other.
I heard it from a urological surgeon, but there's no telling where he got his information.

Little snippet the CDC's website-

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infection
While the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) rarely causes cervical cancer, experts agree that infection with certain strains of HPV is one of the strongest risk factors for cervical cancer. The good news is that cervical cancer is preventable and curable if it is detected early with regular screenings.
HPV is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different types or strains. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted. Most infections cause no clinical problems and go away on their own without treatment. However, some infections lead to genital warts in men and women. They may also lead to abnormal Pap tests and cancer of the cervix in women.

Genital HPV infections are estimated to be the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Approximately 20 million people are currently infected with HPV, 50–75% of which is with high-risk types. Every year, about 5.5 million people acquire a genital HPV infection. By age 50, at least 80 percent of women will have acquired a genital HPV infection. Genital HPV infection is especially common among sexually active young women (less than 25 years of age), with prevalence decreasing with older age. Studies have shown that 70% of new HPV infections clear within one year, and as many as 91% clear within two years.

Women who have multiple sex partners without using a condom are also at risk for developing cervical cancer. It has something to do with differing semen. Don't ask me where I heard that... it was a while ago. The jist of it is that women who are only getting semen deposits inside them from one man have less of a risk of getting the cervical cancer than the multiple-partner ones.

That sounds like a crock of shit that was "developed" before the actual cause was known.

HPV is obviously the more plausible reason.

WEll the amount of sexual partners and HPV are connected if I remember right.

something like, younger you are the more likely you are to be exposed to HPV, and HPV being one of the leading causes it makes sense, the pill is also a cause because one would be less likely to use a condom..

Could be wrong tho

I believe it comes from an imbalance of humours in the body, or a small troll living in a woman's vagina.
