So, I'm applying for...

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse (good/bad school btw?! only have heard good things so far) and the little essay thing with the application says to "Write a concise statement with any additional information that is important to convey to the admissions committee. Information that may be important might include your aspirations, work experience, creative talents, factors affecting your academic record, or why you are applying to UW-La Crosse."

My "concise statement" is currently 3 pages long and single spaced. I don't think that qualifies as a concise statement, but I feel that everything I have included is important, since it explains me school/college/military/work history, my goals, aspirations, why I want to go there, etc... So, my question is, do you think 3 pages would be an acceptable "concise statement?" >_<

Don't forget your topic sentence and make sure your thesis statement is spot on. They are going to read like hundreds of those apps.

Anyone have any links to a good set of standard writing guidelines that would apply to something like this? It's been years since I've had to write a "proper" paper, heh.

Don't make it three pages, they read hundreds of these papers that all say the same thing. Your essay should be about a page if it is single spaced. No matter how original you think your reason for wanting to go to school there is, they have heard it before. You need to write something that will catch their attention and hold it. Making your introduction stand out above all is very important, that will catch their attention and make them want to read on. Try to make the essay a story within a story for example, opening with dialogue is very effective, especially when you are recapping a profound life changing event. My AP english teacher gave me this advice when I was in high school, and my essay not only got me admission to my college, but 40 grand in scholarship money. So I would think it was effective advice. Good luck, pm me if you want any help or if you would like me to dig up a copy of my essay as an example for ya.

I don't know much about UW-LaCrosse, but UW-Madison I've never heard anything but good about.
