Benching question

A remark made by Finawin in another thread got me thinking.

If you can't bench your own weight, you are out of shape. (unless otherwise injured or inable to do so)


I remember in high school soccer we had to hit the gym to work out three times a week. At the time I weighed about 170 pounds and probably in the best shape of my life (besides boot camp, where at the end, I did one pull up from a dead hang, only time ever in my whole life.)

Anyway...............

I could squat 225 pounds, yet I could barely bench the bar (45 pounds). The trainer said because I was so tall, that my arms were to tall to correctly do a bench, or a push up for that matter.

Does that make sense, and is there any truth to that?

How tall were you in high school?

I was still 5'11" or 6'0" and had no problems at that time *shrug*

uh no that is a bullshit statement.

with longer arms the only difference is it is harder than someone with shorter arms due to leverage

That's odd, considering most tall people I know actually have trouble doing squats correctly initially. People with long legs will have to lean forward alot more to keep the bar over their feet. As I said in that same thread, it took me forever to get adequate flexibility.

I used to detest those 5'6"-7" guys who could drop ass and keep a perpendicular back. (But at least I wasn't short :lol: )
