DirectX owns me.

This message is haunting me, and has been for over 3 hours. I can't figure it out. I revitalized my old eq1 computer and it works wonderfully, networked it to my eq2 computer and proceeded to get some cheesy age of mythology LAN gaming up, but the eq1 is giving me this "Initiation Failed" message right after the intro sequence.

So I checked up google and fucked with everything that needed fuckingwith to no avail. I check out dxdiag and find this in the Test Direct3D:

direct3d test results: failure at step 8 (creating 3d device): HRESULT = 0x887602eb (error code)

which repeated twice more. After more searching I find that my video card is not compatible with DirectX 9.0c apparantly? So I uninstal directx via dxerad, stick 8.1 in and still now it only gives me the message once. If anyone has any insight I would appreciate it greatly =\

The eq1
Nvidia geforce 256 (drivers updated)
VIA AC97 audio chipset (drivers updated)
dunno how to tell what my motherboard is, I'm running off windows 98se (which I'm going to stick linux upon instead to check out all the hype, or nemesis if I can find it)

I used to get it, I forgot how I remedied it.

I probably just reinstalled windows. I fucking hate directx.
