So.........

My roommate has EQ2 and doesn't like it. So I was thinking about starting a character because I am getting bored with WoW. Any suggestions or helpful hints I should know before trying it?

Priests are powerful motherfuckers, unlike their EQ1 counterparts.

They're in as much demand as it was when we'd get tells for groups nonstop too, I'm sure you remember how that went.

Are there factions like in WoW?

I tried being a non healer and I hate it, thanks for the heads up, Fin.

Freeport VS. Qeynos

Evil VS. Good

There are quests to defect to the other side however. This can be done at...15?

I wish my video card wasn't dead, I'd be playing this right now :(

Yes, you are either good and start in Gaynose or are evil and start in Freeport.

It's Qeynos vs Freeport without the PvP (atm). You can take hidden ways to get into each others towns but if the guards see you you are kicked out of town. You can purchase from merchants in the opposite city by invis'ing or sneaking and standing behind them.

Advice:

Once you hit the mainland, talk to everyone and do every quest you can find. They make the early levels fly by and you really learn the lay of the land. You can also gear yourself completely (or pretty close to) that way. Also, items will give quests too. Bookcases, sacks, stacks of books, signs on trees, etc.

It's really hard to gauge a class until you at least get to 10 and start getting more specialized spells. 20 is when you really get into the nit and grit. I played 3 characters to 22 and many more to 10-12 before getting the one I really loved. (Troubador).

Ack, I screwed that up. I meant go to Highhold, don't go to Mistmoore. That is my server. Mart plays a ton, and we have a nice guild. Toss plays less than Fin has sex. :cool6:

Sorry, I can't multi task very well!

Cleric's specialty is reactive heals. If as a cleric you heal in EQ2 like you were expected to in EQ1 (wait til low, then blow out a big heal) you will be OOM all the time.

Treat it as a finesse game. Reactive heals are cast on the tank (or whoever) and whenever they get hit, it procs a heal onto them for a certain amount. After x number of procs, the buff fades and has to be reapplied.

So have it on them when they are almost full and they will stay that way. Put them on when they are almost dead and they will die (the amount healed is not usually enough to cover damage taken completely).

As a cleric you also have the best (I believe) straight heals but they are very mana prohibitive.

One other thing to keep in mind about eq2. I said earlier that you will be OOM alot by doing a certain thing, going oom isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Compare your mana to the mana of the others in your group ( you can see it all of course) If you all have comparable levels then you are doing about right. If you are oom and everyone else is full or nearly full then you need to look at your style and see where you could be more efficient (too many big heals not enough reactives).

Eq2 is very different from EQ1. In EQ2 you are expected to be OOM if you are doign stuff that's even remotely challenging. The great part is with good food/water you will be Full again within a minute so don't sweat it.

Hope that helped a bit.

NP one of my old guildies in EQ1 who was a cleric, played 1 in EQ2 as well and was always so frustrated with people dieing in her groups. I asked her when she was using her reactive heals, and she told me she was throwing em on about 50% (like an old HoT) and then trying to spam the Archhealling spells when the tank kept going down. With recast times it's hard to spam those things effectively.

I pointed out some of the same things to her as in my post above and suddenly no one was dieing anymore!
