I don't have a PDA, but I want one

Postby Tikker » Wed May 04, 2005 11:54 am

What's something decent?

I'm pretty much going to just pick something up off ebay, so obviously I'm looking to spend as little as possible

I'd like to get something that can do the basics (addresses, phone numbers, calendar, etc)

but I'd also like something that's got the ability to take a memory upgrade (sd, compact flash, etc)

and I'd like to be able to listen to MP3's, as well as possibly read PDFs (eBooks~)

need suggestions!

Palm Tunseng T5 is one of my preferences but its a bit pricy. I am still a big fan of palm in general though.

Hmm, I found PalmOS to be really good. Based on my few PDAs I'd say theres was by far the best.

What exactly are you looking for, Tikk? Are you looking for blackberry type operations, or more just a repository for information?

Mostly I want something I can do the basic PDA functionality (calendar, contacts, etc) as well as play MP3s, and read eBooks on

I don't give a crap about wireless networking, bluetooth, yada yada, altho it'd be nice

am Ipaq is almost exactly what I want, i just don't want to spend a lot of money at all, so I'm checking into the older PDA's, that have enough juice to play MP3

If your primary concern are the basics + MP3, you could pick up something like a palm Zire 31 ($129). They are not overly expensive and do what your looking for.

lol Ganzo that thing looks exactly like the new phones all the partners at my office got two months ago... unlimited minutes, internet, pretty much satelite cell phone w/ internet.

Boss claims you could be in the middle of the mountains, down in the valley and still download pron. - that made me laugh, but he was serious

hmm, I know the zire 72 can do it and that adobe has a palm veriosn of the reader. It does also come with an application for reading ebooks but its possible that the 31 can not.

I wish I had a justifiable need to buy one. Unfortunetaly, I'd spend the money to buy one and it'd end up collecting dust a week after I got it.

it also sounded like you needed to buy an expansion card just to be able to play MP3, then a flash card to store the MP3

I'd rather pickup a used ipaq, or something, i think

If you can afford an ipaq, its a great product. Especially if your going to use what it offers.

Ditto here. I've had 3 corporate ones when I travelled, but now that I work at home most of the time and don't have one, I can't see the need for one.

Just fuck it and get a PSP, Tik.

Well

I bought a GBA when they came out, and I've used it less than 10 times

I'm not that I'd get much more use out of a PSP

the key thing for me, is the ability to read eBook, and listen to mp3

looking at jpg of a pdf isn't quite the same thing, heh

I guess it's a good thing then that you're not the one who's looking for a PDA that can read PDF's and play MP3's, huh?

Did you have any relevant personal experience with a PDA brand to add to this conversation Finawin, or are you just hoping for someone to agree with you?

palm os is the way to go since it isnt microsoft

i do give windows CE for being the least buggy peice of crap MS makes. the dell axim is excellent and the x30 can be ordered without bluetooth while the x50v is more or less a notebook replacement

So i've had this MP 780 for a week or so

It's a LOT bigger than I expected

It's not so much a PDA (even tho it's running CE) as it is a mini laptop

it's got a full touch type keyboard (which is cool) and it plays MP3's not too bad at all

I need to pick up a CF card as 32 mb doesn't really give you too big of a library

screen resolution is 640x240 which is insanely nice

but

it's kind of a shitty lcd, no way would movies look decent on it

reading eBooks is awesome tho

that being said, for the size, it's not powerful enough
might as well carry around a laptop

can't use the pcmcia slot unless it's plugged into power

I've had a Palm Tungsten E since Christmas and I use it every day. I have my logbook in there, the list of all the hotels and phone numbers we fly to, several games from Monopoly to Chess to Galaxian (yes, galaxian in full color!I!I!). I bought the upgrade slot chip and I can fit about 3 CDs worth of music on it. And the ability to use Excel/Word format is helpful. The calendar and format is very easy to use, reminds me of the Franklin Covey I used to use when I was in sales. All in all a very helpful little machine for $200 plus the chip. I like listening to music while playing the games, instead of just pretending I don't exist while not looking at anyone while on the subway.
