The mental illness & rights thread brings up another interesting question:

Do people have the right to kill themselves if they so desire?

(We'll leave killing yourself in the face of terminal illness out of it, since thats sort of a seperate issue).

I really don't think you have to worry about punishment if you kill yourself.

The only problem would be those who do it wrong.

It shoudl be illegal and they should all be given the death penalty.

Seriously though, suside should not be illegal (as in attempted murder). However I think anyone who fails to kill themselves should be put into some major theropy.

What I've learned is that people who attempt suicide and don't succeed never truly wanted to die so much as they were crying out for attention/help etc.

I believe if people are so miserable that they truly do want to die, it's their right to kill themselves. It may be painful to those who love them, and it may be a selfish act, but who truly wants to be around a suicidal person bringing everyone around them down? If they're truly, truly miserable then they're just going to be a damper on society.

Samson saccrificed himself, there is a big difference. Suicide is a sin against God.

That being said, I will refer to my view on abortion, I would never do it, but that doesn't give me the right to tell someone else what they can and can not do.

Samson hated the Philistines so much (for not only stealing his first wife away from him, but for gouging out both of his eyes) that he wanted more than anything to kill as many of them as he could one last time while he was a prisoner. It had absolutely nothing to do with sacrifice. You might want to read Judges 16:1-31 again. He had fully planned to commit suicide, and even prayed to God to give him the strength to pull it off... which God granted him. Judges 16:28-30 "Then Samson prayed to the Lord, "O sovereign Lord, remember me. O God, please strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes." Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" Then he pushed with all his might and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived."

This is clear-cut suicide, not sacrifice. In fact, sacrifice isn't a word that would even enter my mind in this scenario.

Yes, I believe that actually happened. The recording of events surrounding the time of Samson was not a parable or metaphor.

A 1st Sgt in a unit I was in got in trouble because some dumbshit pussy Lance Corporal called him and said he was going to kill himself... The 1st Sgt told him to quit bitching and do it or get his ass back to work.

The kid jumped off a 7 story building landing head first. Fuck em I say. If people want to kill themselves they are only helping cleanse the gene pool of wussymens.

Depends what they're going through. I don't think anyone would begrudge someone who, say, had terminal cancer and was in constant pain so bad that even morphine barely took the edge off killing himself.

Someone from a good home and family, who refused to get psychiatric help and wallowed in self-pity and angst, maybe, but each case is unique. After all, serious depression is usually from an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, and thus is not something someone has any control over whatseover.

Generally, yes. It's also an abrogation of responsibilities implicit or explicit, but in most cases the interests of population control will balance this out.
