A friend is someone who will get out of bed at 3AM to bail you out of jail for getting into a druken bar brawl.

A TRUE friend will be sitting next to you saying "Damn but that was a good fight".

People, mostly younger people, tend to go for quantity over quality. A set of girls can get into a fight over a boy, a couple days later, they are ok, because they were one less on people around them in the crowd.
As you grow older (I'm only 22, so I cant really speak yet) you tend to drop the extras and stay with the people who are most like you. My best friend, I have had since 6th grade. She is my other family. Her mother introduced me to family in Mexico as her daugher. Without sarcasm in her voice. She housed me for a year or so. We look alike in a lot of ways, kind of like how a dog looks like the owner...I like to think I am the owner because I am prettier.
This is going to sound like a "Love is..." strip, but, a friend is someone who will listen to you. I mean listen to you when you have a problem and not interup with that "oh yeah that happened to me, see one time yadda yadda yadda". Someone who will listen to you and not try to one up your problems. The only friend I have that meets this standard is Gidan.
A friend will also tell you when you look like shit and not worry about your feelings, because they know you really wanted to know. I have no friends like this.
