I've felt that about Newsweek for years. Look at some back copies sometime. It should be calle Fearweek. All it does is tell you the sky is falling.

They reported that interrogators in Gitmo flushed a Quran down the toilet to get prisoners to talk. This caused riots in Afghanistan and a bunch of people died and hundreds were injured in a wave of ant-American sentiment. Newsweek retracted the story this week. go go responsible reporting

If any book deserves to be flushed, it sure is the Koran though. :P

Has to be one of the most idiotic things I've read in my lifetime.

Chapter 1:

God is all loving, giving, and all compassionate. Praise god.

BUT HE WILL FUCKING TORTURE YOU FOREVER IF YOU DON'T BELIVE IN HIM, YOU SHALL BURN INDEED. DIE INFIDELS.

For God is all loving, giving, and all compassionate. Praise god.

Chapter 2: see chapter 1
Chapter 3: see chapter 2
and so on. :/

so has the Koran apparently. Actually they say the entire thing was translated completely ass backwards and is a big part of the reason why it comes off as violent. I personally don't care. We should ban the entire religion outright.

People died as a direct result of this article. It has increased tension in the region and could very well be a catalyst that will cause the death of many more people.

Newsweek has acknowledged that it made a mistake, but people are still dead as a result. Should their be a legal response for this? Is the press free of all responsibility from hardship they cause by distributing mis-information? imho the media is one of the most powerful entities on the planet... and most outside the law.
"Liberals believe government should take people's earnings to give to poor people. Conservatives disagree. They think government should confiscate people's earnings and give them to farmers and insolvent banks. The compelling issue to both conservatives and liberals is not whether it is legitimate for government to confiscate one's property to give to another, the debate is over the disposition of the pillage."

The Koran isn't translated, it's *in* Arabic....

I think the only reason they are retracting is the brutish response, the riots. Newsweek gave ample time for the pentagon to respond, to deny before the story ran, and they didnt. I feel like this happened. This isnt rathergate. We are only seeing a backlash because of the muslim violence.

OK..so taking the unsubstantiated word of one anonymous source is good reporting? Cripes they were going by a report he said he read by someone else but he never gave them a copy of the report and never witnessed anything himself. He could have read that info on a blog somewhere, it would have been about as reliable.

hmmm... maybe translation wasn't the best word. I was watching a show on discovery about it and they said it is riddled with mistakes, many of which are cornerstones of their religion.

For lack of a better explanation is their any possibility is was originally in an ancient version of arabic and then translated to a new version?

I want one of those toilets!

That's got to be some pretty impressive flushing power in that bowl if you can get the entire Terrorist's Handbook down it without having to call a plumber. Either that or they have access to the world's largest plunger!

Funny thing is... there are over a BILLION Muslims around the world. Only a "handfull" are fanatic enough to commit terrorism. All religions have zealots that take their faith a little far. How many abortion doctors have been killed by Christian zealots? Yet, we don't label the Bible as a "Terrorist's Handbook," now do we?

Atleast our country has a inteligence agency. Best thing you have is Dudley Doright.

As far as the Newsweek goes, I dont think we can touch them. Maybe if we made them put the story right next to how Burrt and Loni are getting back together and the story that Mohammed's face has been see baked onto a piece of pumpernickle.

Do you watch the news? Or listen to the news? Or read the news?

I didn't think so. You should try it some time.

Interesting site. It lists the number of Al-Qaeda as 50,000. For the Taliban the number is unknown. However 50k people in one Muslim terrorist orginization is certainly more then a handful.

Hey well would you look at that!

Red Cross raised Guantanamo Koran abuse concerns

By Saul Hudson
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The International Committee of the Red Cross told the Pentagon as early as 2002 detainees at Guantanamo Bay prison had reported U.S. personnel mishandled the Koran, Red Cross and U.S. officials said on Thursday.

I really dont see why anyone is so surprised. You wanted callous war hawks running things. Well, you got them.
