Perhaps you should look up the word "satire" on dictionary.com. I assure you I do not talk in satirical terms when talking about Tool.

<i>I've been a loser all my life, I'm not about to change
If you don't like, there's the door, nobody made you stay
There ain't a woman on the planet who can deal with it
Just how I wanted it, I'm hating all of this

Well I'm hating, all of this
I'm hating, all of this
All of this, all of this
Now I know why, I hide my love from you somedays
No I don't mind keeping this bottled inside me
You came along, and tore this wall down around me
Looks like you found me
Now I know why
I felt like shit when I woke up this morning</i>

Well! I can really relate to those lyrics.
Oh wait, no I can't.

I never said I liked every single one of NB's songs...

Here's an awesome one though:

Fathers hands were lined with dirt
From long days in the field
And mothers hands are serving meals
In a cafe on Main Street
With mouths to feed
Just trying to keep clothing on our backs
And all I hear about is
How it's so bad, it's so bad

[Chorus:]
It's too bad, It's stupid
Too late, so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
Let's talk

You left without saying goodbye
Although I'm sure you tried
You call the house from time to time
To make sure we're alive
But you weren't there
Right when I'm needed you the most
And now I dream about it
How it's so bad, it's so bad

[Chorus]

Father's hands are lined with guilt
For tearing us apart
Guess it turned out in the end
Just look at where we are
Made it out, still got clothing on our backs
And now I scream about it
How it's so bad, it's so bad

[Chorus x2]

No time, last one, let's go

That scenario has certainly been played out in many families over the years.

The height of brilliant lyrics:

"I can't say what I want to,
even if I'm not serious.
Things like....
"Fuck yourself,
kill yourself,
you piece of shit."

People tell me what to say,
what to think ,
and what to play.

I say...
"Go fuck yourself,
you piece of shit.
Why don't you go kill yourself?"

Just kidding."

You know, perhaps if they would rename themselves STOOL, in place of TOOL, then I could take them for what they're worth... a steaming pile of :dung:

And don't bother trying to justify that song with some intricate explanation that you think only STOOL secret society members "get." I "get it" as a non-member of this secret society, and it was stupid.

Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to guide you..
like me, like me, like me, like me

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me .
Now don't you judge or question.
You are broken now ,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

My Gods will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.

[x2]
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now
Open my eyes and blind me with your light

If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me .
Now don't you judge or question.
You are broken now ,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.

[x2]
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now.
Open my eyes, blind me with your light now.

Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.

he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you

Actually that is quite funny. One of the great things about Tool, is they never take themselves too seriously.

Does anyone ever bother to read song lyrics? To me they are pointless without the music.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

Depends on the band. One of the big reasons I was a big Rush fan as a kid is their lyrical writings were so good <Even if their music was a cheap Led Zep spinoff often times>

One of my favorite Tool songs

Schism

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering. Fundamental differing.
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes, testing our communication
The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end, crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to
Point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
Finding beauty in the dissonance.

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication.

Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any
Sense of compassion
Between supposed lovers/brothers

Nothing mysterious about those lyrics, unless you consider the concept that communication is all-important in relationships; and the lack thereof can destroy them to be something mysterious.

Hrm now I'm curious to check out some of the Tool songs. I'll have to listen to some of them on itunes this weekend and see if I dig the vocals because the lyrics seem pretty good.

I'm sure you've heard many tool songs, Vaelie.

Download Sober and 46 and 2. They are very much like a lot of the uber bands from the early 90s, like Alice in Chains and others, cept still around and not ODed :)

Some songs to check out (including ones mentioned):

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html?200528#46and2">46&2</a>
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/undertow.html?200528#sober">Sober</a>
<a href="http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tool/opiate.html">Opiate</a>

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html?200528#thirdeye">Third Eye</a>
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html?200528#jimmy">Jimmy</a>
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html?200528#eulogy">Eulogy</a>
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/undertow.html?200528#prisonsex">Prison Sex</a>
<a href="http://www.geocities.com/bobagadush/lyrics/aenima.html?200528#stinkfist">Stinkfist</a>

The list is extensive, but those are a good start. Also, Maynard has a side-project band A Perfect Circle. They have some good stuff - though I was slightly dissapointed with emotive, their latest album. It's a more mellow, free-form band than Tool, but shares a lot of the same dark undertones regarding Christianity.

Am I the only one that doesn't like words in songs at all? (Unless they're foreign language and you have no idea wtf they're really saying). It takes away from the MUSIC part of the music imo. 0.o

Communication being all-important in a relationship goes against your beliefs and value system? Well, that certainly explains a lot...

Maynard is a smacktard, not a communicator. He's the human version of Butthead from Beavis and Butthead. His lyrics communicate that very well.

If I ever write songs with lyrics, instead of just instrumental stuff like I do now, I'll for sure use a voice altering device so you can't tell what the heck I'm saying. Lyrics suuuuuck! :P

Uh...

...I should play GOD
and shoot you myself.
I'm very tired of waiting.

I should
kick you,
beat you,
fuck you,
and then shoot you in your fucking head.

...Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies.

I had a friend once he took some acid
Now he thinks he's a fire engine
It's okay until he pisses on your lighter
Kinda smells kinda cool kinda funny anyway

satan, satan, satan...

I had a friend once he took some ecstasy
Tried to marry me and every one in the room
He was sort of loving kinda caring,
kinda tried to fuck my lazy boy
It got a bit messy all over the curtains,
arm chair covers, throw pillows, and carpeting

satan, satan, satan...

Prison Sex

It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then,
you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
I've got my hands bound,
my head down, my eyes closed,
and my throat wide open.

And the angel of the lord came unto me, snatching me up from my place of slumber. And took me on high, and higher still until we moved to the spaces betwixt the air itself. And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust." And I sprang from my slumber drenched in sweat like the tears of one million terrified brothers and roared, "Hear me now, I have seen the light! They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.

Come down.
Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]
Goodbye...

I just spent about a half hour or so reading lyrics written by MAYNARD himself, and all I can say about him is that he is just an overgrown child. Very immature, very irrational, and very vulgar. But most of all... very immature. Their fan base follows suit.

You do understand that he writes those to mock people like yourself right?
