Open Water *true story*

Postby Diekan » Fri May 27, 2005 7:06 pm

Saw a good show on Court TV the other day about the movie Open Water. Was talking about how a lot of people, including law enforcement, seem to think that the couple actually faked their deaths....

Was interesting...

I don't buy it. I think the film was a pretty good probable piece-together of what actually went down.

Well the movie was made by people in Hollywood...

The DOCUMENTARY consisted of interviews of the ACTUAL investigators who worked the case... I'll take their word for it over some Hollywood producer.

Yes, but the movie was made based on the facts that they knew about. True they added most of it... but they had to. They knew that a young married couple checked into a hotel and then booked a reservation on the dive boat. They knew that same young couple never checked back out of the hotel and nobody saw them again since the morning of the dive. That pretty much tells me that the film, although filled with fluff, was fairly accurate and probable as to what actually occurred.

Dude it was a MOVIE... of course they're going to paint it to be as romantically dramatic as possible.

I watched the entire documentary which again, as I already pointed out, included tons of interviews with the detectives who actually worked the case... interviews with investigators who actually participated in the search.

Not trying to pick a fight, but are you one of those people who believes everything they see in a movie?

They even interviewed the woman's brother...

They found clues that didn't add up to them dying at sea. Not to mention a boat that had went to the SAME spot the day after came back with TWO extra people, according to the boats manifest... The boat was used by a huge group of Italians, but some of the people heard Englished being used.

You should watch it, if it's ever on again.

Here's a few FACTS shown in the documentary:

1. They put on TWICE the amount of dive gear than was needed for that particular trip. What was most "odd" was that the wet suits they put on - extra thick material... which in that water is not required at all.

2. They found the woman's vest... but when they found it, it was completely intact, no marks, no tears... nothing... not to mention that it was unbuckled - which indicated it was taken off.

3. The boat that went to the same spot (which was used by a group of Italians) ended up returning with two more people than they had left with. People heard English being spoken on the return trip.

4. There were a couple of fishing boats out near the same spot they had been "left behind" at, that same night... with lights bright enough to been from miles away. Why didn't they swim for them?

5. There were many sightings of them AFTER they were supposed to have vanished.

There were tons of other facts that just didn't add up. For the longest time - the police suspected they had faked the whole thing.

So, you can go ahead and believe Hollywood if you want... like I said... I'll take the word of the people who were actually there.

Why would they fake their own deaths?

That's one thing the they couldn't figure out. They weren't in any known trouble, didn't seem to have money problems... didn't seem to really have an enemies... that's what the investigators had the most trouble with.

Then again, who really knows what skeletons people have in their closets...

I'm NOT saying they DID fake it... I'm just talking about what the show discussed, pointed out, and dealt with.

I thought it was very interesting... and all the facts the investigators found pointed to them faking it...

Whether or not they did - they don't know.

I'll try to catch the documentary when it comes around again. Sounds interesting to say the least.

I know we talked about this like 6 months ago or something, but... have you seen the movie Kizzy? I think I swore I'd never go back in the ocean again, EVER after seeing it.

Well, that would make sense then because in the movie they depicted the wife as having taken the vest off and sank to the bottom deliberately... a suicidal move.

I'll still try to catch the documentary when it comes back around, but the more I think about it the more the "they faked their deaths" philosophy doesn't make any sense to me.

The 2 people that made the movie got caught in the Tsunami. They survived.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.
