a continuation from my nail.exe thread

Postby brinstar » Wed Jun 01, 2005 10:59 pm

if you'll recall, in the other thread i mentioned that i fried windows media player in the process of smoking out nail.exe

well today i realized that windows fax and picture viewer doesn't work anymore either

i can right-click on a file and click Open With... and then select windows fax and picture viewer and i get an alert box that says:

Error loading C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll

The system cannot find the file specified.

i googled shimgvw.dll and discovered that it pretty much IS windows fax and picture viewer... but i a) looked in my system32 folder and did indeed find shimgvw.dll and b) replaced it with a fresh one from dlldump.com and i still get the same error

why? how do i fix it?

try and find another copy of the file and copy it over the top of that one. Its a long shot but its possible you had a corrupted download.

Its also a possiblity that the program that is trying to load the dll is the problem, it cant load it, not because it cant find it but because the program just hits a fatal error on the load and kicks back a cannot load error.

[Start] [Run] type regedit.exe and click [OK]

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/SystemFileAssociations/image/ShellEx /ContextMenuHandlers

Check the ShellImagePreview folder and make sure it has the String Value (Default)

If not, then create it.

I had the same issues from this same malware except it was exporer.exe that was fried. I would remove the malware, reboot and then I could not get a desktop. Explorer.exe could not be found etc. I would restore the system state and it would be fine except the malware was present. I haven't found a fix for it other than blowing it away and reloading windows.
