Problem after thunderstorm

This afternoon a pretty big t-storm rolled through, and the power shut off around 4 times in a span of 15 minutes. I go to reboot my computer and I get to the windows boot screen, which then shifts to a blue screen error that reads:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

unmountable_boot_volume

If this is the first time this has happened, restart your comp. If the problem continues disable or remove any new hardware. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. Use Safemode if you need to disable any of these.

I tried to boot in Safemode, however I get the same error message.

ok real simple man.


get your xp cd out
boot to the CD
when the cd hits the blue setup screen hit 'R'

it will then drop you into a does prompt.

type the followin

chkdsk /r

Once that is done(about 15 minutes to 3 hours depneding)
type the following

fixboot

say yes to rewriting your bootsector. no this wont kill your shit...dont panic here...

after that type
exit
let it reboot into windows. if it fixes the problem great. if not we will go from there.

PS once it is done if you get into windows run a clean up, a disk check, and a defrag.

Windows xp can go flaky if the system is rapidly shut off too many times. you may have dmgd files hence the need for the scanddisk and defrag.

Thanks a ton, Lyion got to me on aim before you.. but you were right kahar . However, I did not run fixboot.. is this going to be a problem?

If it booted to windows, your set. All fixboot was going to do was rewrite your boot bootsector. If you booted, your good.

most times the chkdsk alone does not cut it when it you cant boot. both have to be done. if it acts up again within a short time try the fix boot option as well.
