Voice Altering Device

I'm looking for a nice Voice altering device, the kind that would be used for rock bands ect. One that has maybe 50 or 100 or so different voices.

Does anyone know of a good one, and where I could get it? I've tried googling it but all I get are devices that change your voice for the telephone...

talkbox through the guitar, i remember playin with one... you basically hum into a lil straw plastic tube thing and it goes all crazy for ya.

I think that is the kind of stuff that you would have to do in studio with a good sound board and some knowledge.

I used to have this little robot transformer looking guy, he was red and blue, he had a straw in his back and when you talked into it, your voice changed. Search eBay and find him

Yeah, that's good for a garage band/experimentation/goofing off, etc. Eventide is pro audio for serious musicians... but it comes with a hefty price tag too. I would go for the slop Brinstar posted if I were you. I say slop because I've never been a fan of any Digitech products myself, but for you and your budget and for what you're trying to accomplish I think it would work just fine.

yeah anything digitech isn't really going to come close to eventide as far as quality goes

but there is another way to look at it: in the hands of a serious musician, ANYTHING becomes pro audio gear

Ok, my uncle actually owns that digitech one so I got to try it out... and it didn't have enough truly different voices to be worth it. It had about 6 odd voices and the rest were just echo effects and stuff like that.

Does anyone know of a voice altering device that mainly has different voices , not just a bunch of 'effects' that don't truly change your voice?

I'm thinking about making music with actual lyrics and stuff, but since I'm a bit self conscious about singing with my real voice I'd want to use a voice changer.

What I mean by "changing your voice" is, I want it to make you sound like a robot, a chipmunk, a monster, deep and growly, ect. I know something like that exists, because I've heard quite a wide variety of music use such things. I just have no clue where to look and the intranet hasn't made it an easy search.

if you want my honest opinion...

effects that alter your voice (whatever they may be) in music are like garlic in cooking. just a touch in your dish makes everything that much better, but too much can easily ruin it. in this case, too many borderline-goofy effects all over your voice can make you sound gimmicky.

as you have already admitted, you have an issue with self-esteem. that's fine, nearly every musician suffers from this shyness at some point in their career. hell, some of them never DO break free. on my drums, i can do a high-octane 150-proof 90 minute set on stage in front of several hundred people, break cymbals, bust my knuckle on a snare-drum lug, and fall off my stool-- without a shred of concern about what they think of me. but if i try to sing anything more than harmony in front of even ONE person-- even my best friend-- my mouth gets dry and my palms get all sweaty. it just takes practice, you have to do what you can with what you have without feeling apologetic. cultivate your need to create with diligence, and soon enough your drive and determination will iron out any self-esteem wrinkles.

I gave you two excellent example of signal manglers. Get yourself a decent mic, sound card and some VST plugins for your computer as well.

I am agreeing with Tossica here (And Brin). Just grab a microlimiter. Get a shit PA and any random microphone and you have a start to find out what your voice can do. Also, crack a copy of Adobe Audition and um... er, ya. There is no such thing as a bad vocalist if you find your nitch. Hearing yourself natural + recorded will begin the abolition process of your ego (or the construction of one, you pick).

if you're recording onto your laptop then save yourself the money and just download the full version of Logic. record the voice track and then just fuck around with it in Logic. the possibilities are pretty limitless

I've got some 25 year old recording equipment and was planning to use that, but I don't know --- would using a PC be better?

Hrm, Logic sounds good, but it appears to be a macintosh program!! :eyecrazy:

Is there a windows version?
