We have carpenters here? Right?

Postby The Kizzy » Thu Jun 09, 2005 10:29 am

So the bathroom suffered some water and possibly termite damdage, so we removed the outside wall in the bathroom down to the wood that is actually the frame of the house, and it needs to be replaced. Is that possible? How can you do that without taking off all the wood on the house? Oh and the walls were the wood frame, then insulation, then this cement stuff and then the drywall, that stuff is hard to get off. Any experienced help is appreciated. Thanks.

Is the bottom plate damaged? The 2x4 that the studs rest on is typically water/termite treated so it shouldnt have suffered any damage. Is the house two story or one? If it's one it should be fairly simple to replace as long as its not an exterior wall. In a one story house, most walls that are interior are not load bearing and should be no prob to replace. If the wall is exterior then it is supporting rafters and that could be a pain.

set another 2x4 along side of the rotted vertical piece to take the weight off.

remove rotting piece, replace piece removed and leave brothered 2x4 in place, connect together and replace insulation/wall.

I concur. Rip out the wall, put a new supporting stud to keep everything in place. Use sawsall to thrash that shit. Replace old studs, by toe-nailing them in. Then replace sheet rock. Wallpaper or paint and booom...atleast that's what I would do. Don't forget insullation. ^_~
