I can tell you why.

You all believe because you feel it's of some benefit to you. You take comfort in believing there is a higher power watching over you and if all the stories are true, you won't have to be just a rotting corpse when you die.

It can boil down to personal experience. A great many people can claim to have experienced God in one form or another.

People can wholeheartedly believe the CIA is watching them, how more outlandish is that than believing you felt god?

There is a portion of the brain that, in some individuals, if you zap it, you lose the sense of self and believe you are experiencing god. Maybe that part got frizzled for awhile and caused the experience.

I'm planning on becoming a research psychologist for a living -- and that will definitely be one of the first experiments I do - see if people who have had 'religious experiences' qualify for any of the criteria for schizophrenia or other psychotic illnesses.

I don't see how it's an insult, it's genuine scientific curiousity. It's also the most simple explanation.

The mind can play some pretty fucked up tricks --- and religious experiences could be one of them.

Quite a bit. It's much more likely that either the NSA or the FBI is watching them.

Evolution is childish? Using the scientific method and attempting to understand the way biology works, and how all the life on the earth at present got to be the way it is at present is childish? Studying nature and genetics and animal populations to figure out adaptations to niches and species drift is childish? So you're saying biology is childish, huh? Do you find physics childish too? Sorry to break it to you, but FAITH BASED BELIEFS ARE NOT SCIENCE. You can believe whatever you want, but if what you believe is directly contradicted by science, you're putting yourself in the same category as the flat-earthers, or those who claim that the space program is faked because "God wouldn't let people pierce heaven that way." (yes, there are people who claim this) Science has nothing to say on whether or not God exists, or whether or not he created the universe, caused life to spring into being initially from the primordial soup, etc. That's the realm of faith.

What science discusses is HOW we got from, say, primitive cyanobacteria to humans, dogs, mushrooms, fish, etc. Ignoring the mountains of evidence is sheer wilfull blindness. There's nothing incompatible with faith in evolution, even with the belief that God created man, as certainly an omnipotent diety could've guided evolution as he saw fit in order to reach the ultimate result desired. Such a belief would quite neatly encompass both strong religious faith and belief in the word of the bible, but also be entirely compatible with science. Having faith in God != rejection of science.

No, evolution does. Evolution is a theory that not all scientists believe in. The key word is believe, as a belief is all it is.

This looks like some pretty compelling evidence to me! Only a matter of time before it is hard core proof. When will there be proof of the existence of God? Can you say never?

I see God as a crutch people use as an excuse so they can pass off accountability of their actions.

Doesn't it concern you that you have promised your eternal soul to a powerful omipetent being that without rhyme or reason, but based just on a feeling of faith, you believe is a god of ultimate love.

In the bible it seems he never wanted mankind to know the difference between good and evil from the tree of knowledge. I would think that a god of goodness and love would want his creation to hold the ideal of telling the difference between good and evil as something of ultimate importance for them to know.
