Horses. I'm thinking about getting my son one for Christmas/Birthday this year. His soon to be step mother has some and an extra stall, but one is blind, and one is not broken, so while he takes care of the horses, he is not allowed to ride them. If he gets his own, he gets to learn how to ride, blah blah blah.

ANYWAY~~

What is a good breed that is good with children, and easily breakable, and can you buy them pre broken?

Thanks!!

Horse + taco gave me the most interesting idea... Get a cowboy on a horse (Mindia?), go through the drive through at Taco Bell, and have a black man (I guess we could just spray paint Indo?) tied up laying on a skateboard behind the horse being dragged along.. Video tape it.

Sounds like something you'd see on trigger happy tv or something if they had the balls to get into racial humor.

Kizzy,

I'm no expert on horses but this much I do know... the most mild-mannered, even-tempered horses are quarter horses. I've heard that for years now. They are also the horse of choice for trail riding / weekend riding for many people. Quarter horses are mostly what you see movie stars riding on in Westerns too. Check into AQHA for more info.

Yes, you can find horses for sale that are already broken.
Tennessee Walkers have the smoothest ride. Quarter Horses are pretty common.

Kahar grew up with horses around, I'll have him come and post more info.

Kizzy,

I can talk to Aryylas's mother when I get out of work today. She grew up with horses and has had them her whole life (with the exception of now unfortunately). She knows quite a bit about them.

Your son is lucky, I have always wanted a horse. Aryy says he will get me on some day :)

I had a paint and quarterhorse in Tyler. My aunt broke in the quarter and bought the paint green-broke.
They are quite a bit of responsibility (RIDE IT [fuck you Harrison, never get one]).
What breed is good for children? Well, its like dogs. Any breed is good, just personalities differ. Any can be broken easily, just depends on how much effort you put in and how willing the horse is to learn.

1) Horses are not pets
2) Horses are extremely expensive
3) Horses are not pets

If you understand those things...

Quarterhorses are good for beginners and they're cheap as far as horses go. For a first horse I'd get an older broke horse from a well-known trainer/breeder. Never buy one just because you think it looks pretty. Do not buy one without a horse expert along for opinion. Many horses have problems the normal person won't be able to spot which will just cause you more medical bills in the long term. I personally prefer Draft horses because they're big guys yet have the best demeanor by far and usually have high tolerances. Tennesee Walkers tend to be hard to find and expensive (and hard to find people who understand them). They also have many owners who are the elitist type who think their breed is the best (think BMW owners). I would not reccommend one for a first horse because the breed has many of its own quirks. They also won't do well in western pleasure type events because they don't lope(which PA and Ohio area are heavy in).

Unless he has all the "equipment" needed at the stable he'll have to get at least $500 worth of stuff including saddle, saddle pad, riding gloves, girth, helmet, buckets, boots, fly masks, halters, lead ropes, winter sheets, sleezy's, clippers, brushes, trimmers, fly spray, mane spray. Add to that you need to buy grain and hay ($50)monthly as well as pay Farrier fees ($50-100 depending what you get done) monthly. Yearly immunization shots cost $200-500 (if he shows in 4-H they need even more shots).

Such a high maintenance animal, so it could be a.) really great to teach him responsibility, or b). your burden if he doesn't :catman:

I had a great deal when I was a kid. My father was a building contractor and owned a plumbing company. One of his clients owned a stable. He gave him some freebees and in exchange I was able to get horseback riding lessons on the weekends for a year. I learned to ride western and just loved it. I also had to take care of the horses a few times to "teach me some responsibility." I don't think I would ever want to own a horse myself though after that.

How long has he been taking care of the horses for his stepmother? Maybe before you make the investment you should have him do that for a year before you buy the horse. That way you know it isn't some passing phase and don't waste your money. Also, maybe stepmom & dad can help split the cost of care. Have you spoken to them about it yet?

ps. post pics of the stable/horses asap!!

pss.. mop if you are reading this we need to go horse back riding soon - I miss it!

Thanks Taxx. Adrienne has horses, and one died recently, so she has an extra stall and all of the stuff that he would need. David put his foot down about the extra expense, and wants to wait another year to make sure Trystin can handle the responsibility. While he has done a complete 180 in attitude, there are still some area he needs to work on. So looks like I will be putting this on hold until next Christmas.

In the mean time, have your son take care of his step mothers horses. Try and see if they will let him have one that HE is resposable for. If he slacks off about this, thats a good sign he will again when he has his own.
