DSL tweaks?

Postby DangerPaul » Fri Jun 17, 2005 11:42 pm

I just moved and only have DSL available to me now. It seems slower than shit and downloads drop a lot, any thoughts?

Were you on cable before? What speed DSL service do you have?

I was on cable before and next to no one in my area had it, so speeds were insane. I have a 512MB DSL line now, and even NT will time out from time to time due to the slow connections.

Thats would be 512K not M. Yeah your speed will suck, you went from what was more then likely a 4M to a 512K connection. It probably feels like your back on dialup now.

You must be a good 15K feet our from a CO or atleast 18K from a RT.

512 DSL is fine. Do a tracert to one of the pages you are having trouble with and see what the problem is. I imagine there is a router choking along the way. Complain to your ISP about it.

I'd just start doing some tracert to the pages you're trying to get to

512 should be more than adequate for 99% of the stuff you do

are you way out in the boonies?

With a profile like that, chances are you are, and you'll likely also be on an interleaved set up (ie, ping to your first hop will likely be in the 20-50ms range)

I'd blame it on distance to a node.

When I had DSL it was insanely fast. Pings were great in games too.

D/L speeds were around 300k/s, not amazing but good enough for almost anything.

http://www.dslreports.com/tools

Check this out, there are some great forums there. I would start with the testing tools first.

DSL doesn't run off nodes.

Chances are then that you are running on fixed interleave and that 512 is maxing out your line. For your everyday web use, you will not really be bad off, you will really notice the difference on downloads though. You probably arn't going to be doing any downloads that go faster the 55-60K/sec

eh?

sure it does

the DSLAM cabinet is also known as a node

It just doesn't mean the same thing as it does in a Cable network

Cable and DSL just have different aggregation points

DSL can be an AWESOME connection.

It can also be absolute shit unfortunately.

I got lucky when I bought it at my sister's.

When I got it here a long time ago, it sucked asshole. (15k/s download speeds and pings of >75ms)

It is completely different from a cable modem node.

Chances are this is IDSL which is highly limited, however I thought the max speed of which was only 128?

It doesn't really matter if you are out 5 miles from the CO. You are fucked.

The fact they're different is irrelevant

He called the DSLAM a node, which is fine

It just means something different in the 2 networks

That line right there is all I needed to see :( Anyone know anything about some good satelite ISPs? This timing out surfing the web on every other page is bullshit. I spend maybe 1/32 of the time I used to online anymore and would like to actually use the net when I am trying to.
