Lockups in WoW

Postby veeneedefeesh » Tue Jun 21, 2005 12:49 pm

Already posted this in tech support, but thought it might be a good idea to post here as well.

Ok this used to happen to me while playing EQ, but only rarely and WoW has a couple wrinkles that EQ didnt. What I get in WoW is that fairly often my screen will "sort of" lock. The reason I say sort of is that the mouse is still movable, but nothing comes up when you mouse over something, the keyboard still works, but nothing I type shows up in the WoW screen. It is easy enough to correct altho would be a true biyotch if I was in a raid where other people were effected by my response time. If I ctrl-alt-del and then open and close task manager then switch back to WoW the system picks up where I am at that point in time (I have missed a few seconds real time) This happens about every half hour or so.

Occasionally (about once every few hours) my system will do one of two things. Either it will completely lockup (even the Win Media player in the background locks on a single note and nothing works at all, no keyboard, no mouse control, nothing), OR the video goes psychadelic on me with objects seemingly becoming verticle lines. The only way to solve either of these conditions is to reboot. In the first case cutting the power completely to reboot, in the second (psycho-video) I am able to type /log or /exit to get out of WoW but then the game will do the same thing if you just relaunch it. I have to completely shut down the system before the video will perform properly. Both of these issues also happened while playing EQ albiet alot more rarely, and only right before I quit playing and they altered the video to have stars and such.

It isnt too bad to have to deal with these at lower levels and when I am soloing, but I basically got kicked out of a group yesterday because I kept screen-locking and it would take me 5-10 seconds to get my system back under control enough to contribute anything to the battle. I expect the results of this will become more critical as I get higher and start to actually raid.

By the way I am running a Intell P3 1.2GHz, 768 MB RAMM, GeForce 4400

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Something sort of like this was happening to me before. I think it has to do with shitty GeForce drivers. I rolled mine back to ones that worked.

How far did you have to roll yours back and whee did you find the outdated drivers?

This shit is driving me crazy, I am almost ready to cancel my account because I refuse to group with not being able to stay online for more than 5-10 minutes at a time, and I cant afford a better video card atm.
