Cnn.com wrote:LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Police shot and killed a man involved in an hours-long standoff in a South Los Angeles neighborhood after he wounded an officer, police said. A baby he was holding died in the exchange of gunfire.

At 3:50 p.m. (6:50 p.m. EDT), police responded to a report of the man, Jose Raul Lemos, behaving aggressively and erratically -- he was initially barricaded in a house with a number of weapons.

According to police, Lemos fired at police several times over the next several hours before he ran out of the house -- first firing indiscriminately, then directly at officers, hitting one in the shoulder.

At that point, police opened fire on the man, believed to be in his mid-30s.

"We did everything we could to hold our fire. We showed a tremendous amount of restraint, but unfortunately the suspect's actions dictated this," said Los Angeles Assistant Police Chief Jim McDonnell. "It's a true tragedy."

Although the 19-month-old baby died of a gunshot wound, police did not immediately know if the bullet came from police or the man holding her.

"The officers are taking it very hard," McDonnell said. "Anytime you have a baby killed, it takes its toll."

The wounded officer is in stable condition, police said.

Neighbor Bill Johnson says, "As a community we shouldn't have to watch our kids every second they're playing.

This is why people's children get raped.

No, they get raped because there are sick fucks in the world. When I was a kid, I would be gone from the time school got out until it got dark. I would be at the neighbors, at the park, the 7-11, playing in the woods, whatever. It's really sad how the climate in our neighborhoods has changed so much in the last 20 years. I think the instant access to nationwide news has scared parents in to thinking there are rapists and murderers waiting outside everyone's house.

There aren't?

Seriously, I checked the county sheriff's web site for the list of known sex offenders in my area and there are 16 within a mile of my house and this is a fairly small town. Even if you figure half (and I'm estimating high) are there for bogus or non-parent-worrying reasons that still leaves 8 which are potential threats. 8 is still way too high for my comfort level.

When I was growing up Robert Buell was terrorizing the farm counties in my area by kidnapping and killing girls my age (at the time). If something like that can happen in a podunk area like this it can happen anywhere.
