Oscar Robertson and the Bucks won the championship in 1971, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem's name bears some mention in the "greatest of all time" category, since he is the all-time leader in total points scored for a career, plus he won 6 championships. Another name to throw into the mix is Bill Russell, who won more championships than anyone else, also coached teams to a few, and was one of the first real defensive stoppers in the league.

I think I would personally go with Jordan. In one of the early Lakers-Celtics PC games, you could play him at center and he'd do that ridiculous 360 dunk from the free throw line on like every play, and over Kareem no less. That was pretty impressive. Can't hit a curveball to save his life, though.

I would have to agree with the others on MJ for basketball, and just like lyion I automatically started thinking of baseball players.
For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

Baseball = Babe Ruth or Sandy Koufax (koufax is one of the only players where they changed teh game, just to stop him from dominating as much)

With Koufax are you infering that they lowered the mound because of him? If you are, he was a small part of the reason. In fact the pitcher that is widely regarded as the reason the mound was lowered was Bob Gibson. 1.12 ERA in 1968 (year before they lowered the mound), and a career 2.91 ERA. Koufax's career ERA was 2.71 but never pitched after the mound was lowered. Gibson pitched 17 years and 7 seasons after the mound was lowered.

In fact Koufax's single season ERA does not rank him in the top 40 all time ERA's.

After Sandy Koufax finally tamed his blazing fastball, he enjoyed a five-year stretch as perhaps the most dominating pitcher in the game's history. He won 25 games three times, captured five straight ERA titles, and set a new standard with 382 strikeouts in 1965. His fastball and devastating curve enabled him to pitch no-hitters in four consecutive seasons, culminating with a perfect game in 1965. He posted a 0.95 ERA in four career World Series, leading the Dodgers to three championships.

I'd take koufax over gibson every day of the week

I'll give you a short list.

Wilt Chamberlain has the most impressive stats and even though most would call him a "loser" he did manage to win twice with two different teams and was rarely on a team that wasn't a contender.

Oscar Robertson is probably the best overall player of all time. he averaged a tripple double(I doubt you know what that is) for an entire season! He also won a championship with Milwaukee in....77(Correct me if I'm wrong Vonk)

But...Michael Jordon is really the best IMO. People have stoped talking about him as the best ever since his second botched comeback, but he is was and will always be the greatest ball player of all time, not only as a scorer but as a defender and as a winner. He dominated the league at a position that, at the time, couldn’t dominate. He won year after year, while everyone was after him.

Also Bill Russel is worthy of note, but he was a pretty poor offensive player so I have a hard time calling him the "Greatest".

OMG, thanks Zan, I thought I was loosing it. I could have sworn Babe Ruth played baseball, and then Xao made that post, I thought I was wrong. I would have gotten an F in my class for sure!!!

Perhaps you should have done the work yourself instead posting it here. You never know what you're going to get from NT.

I had already decided that I was going to use Michael Jordan. I wanted other opinions, which was part of the assignment. If I were to base my speech on the fact that Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player of all time, but we must consider others, like Babe Ruth, I would have looked like an idiot.

Trust me, I study my ass off. That's why I am getting straight A's in nursing school.

Just take what ever information you get from here with a grain of salt. Make sure you double check everything especially on stuff for school.

Basketball: Wilt Chamberlain or my personal favorite Larry Byrd
Baseball: Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. For pitcher I would have to go with Three Fingers Brown.
