Brain-Dead Va. Woman Dies After Giving Birth
Wednesday, August 03, 2005

RICHMOND, Va. — A brain dead woman who was kept alive for three months so she could deliver the child she was carrying was removed from life support Wednesday and died, her family said.

Susan Torres' (search) plight attracted worldwide sympathy after she suffered a stroke in May as she battled cancer. She gave birth to a daughter, Susan Anne Catherine Torres, on Tuesday by Caesarean section.

"This is obviously a bittersweet time for our family," Justin Torres, her brother-in-law, said in a statement.

Doctors turned off Torres' life support early Wednesday after she received the final sacrament of the Roman Catholic Church.

The delivery went smoothly and the baby "is doing well," Justin Torres had said earlier in in an e-mail to The Associated Press. The baby weighed 1 pound, 13 ounces, he said.

Torres, a 26-year-old researcher at the National Institutes of Health (search), lost consciousness from a stroke May 7 after aggressive melanoma spread to her brain. Her husband, Jason Torres (search), said doctors told him his wife's brain functions had stopped.

The infant is being monitored in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (search) at the Virginia Hospital Center (search) in Arlington.

Jason Torres quit his job to be by his wife's side, spending each night sleeping in a reclining chair next to her bed. Last month, the fetus passed the 24th week of development — the earliest point at which doctors felt the baby would have a reasonable chance to survive, the brother-in-law said.

Torres was about seven months pregnant when the child was delivered. Doctors had hoped to hold off on delivering the child until 32 weeks' gestation. A full-term pregnancy is about 40 weeks.

A Web site was set up to help raise money for the family's mounting medical bills, and as of two weeks ago, people from around the world had donated around $400,000. The family said it must pay tens of thousands of dollars each week that insurance does not cover.

The couple have one other child — 2-year-old Peter, who has been staying with his grandparents.

"The entire staff and administration of Virginia Hospital Center, especially the physicians and nurses caring for Susan Torres and Baby Girl Torres, are delighted with the successful delivery," the hospital said in a statement. A spokeswoman declined to release additional details.

Since 1979, there have been at least a dozen similar cases published in English medical literature, said Dr. Winston Campbell (search), director of maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Connecticut Health Center (search), which conducted research on the topic.

Keeps me amused during downtimes at work, Tugg.

It's like those little punching bags when you're growing up that keep popping up, you know the damn thing is gonna keep coming back, it's never gonna stay down, but damn if you don't keep hitting it.

So you are setting traps and you don't truly believe anything you say? If you don't believe anything you say, perhaps you do have an ounce of intelligence.. but if the words you say are your truth, I stand by my statement.

My laughter at you is for postulating that I am not intelligent enough for... <insert topic here> which is completely ironic coming from you.

Also, what good is served by keeping the woman alive? If not for artificial means, she would be completely dead right this minute. The only reason they were used in the first place is so that the child could be saved. What benefit is it to society to keep her alive, especially if it was her and the family's wish that she should not be?

That be the first one.

Martrae wrote:Somehow, I'm sure that none of that will be left once all her bills and the baby's are paid. Plus, the husband quit his job. What's he going to live on? How's he keeping his home? Paying his bills? What's he going to do when it's time for the baby to come home?

That be the second one.

Let me add a third question. Terry Schavo could stay alive without machines on her own, with a feeding tube, this woman will die almost instantly soon as the machines are shut off, so what is the point of keeping her attached to the machines? Also, if the body is simply a vessel for the soul, wouldn't it make sense to allow her body and soul be reunited in death? So, I ask, what is the reason you feel she should be kept alive artificially?

Pssst...she's dead already, Paul.

She is still being kept "alive" artificially, until someone flicks the power off.

Hospital space is a very valuable thing these days. To have a person who has 0 chance of recovery kept alive, costing the tax payers tens of thousands a day is a waste. The person who was in that body is dead, its now just a corpse being kept alive by machines for no reason.

She may not be able to feel pain, but at the same time she is not able to feel happiness either, she feels nothing because she isn't in there. Its just a body.

The medical system did wonders to keep her alive for the baby to be born, had it not been for the baby I highly doubt they would have gone through the pain and expence to do it.

To force a hospital to keep her alive is insane and would be an extremely selfish thing for anyone to do. They are not doing it for her, they are doing it for themselves.

The question is Mindia, why do you want to keep her alive? It cant be for her, she is brain dead. If her "soul" is still in her body, all keeping her alive is doing is keeping her from heaven. So keeping her alive certainly is not something you would be doing for her. Why do you get out of it?

I can't use the "I WENT THROUGH 46 HOURS OF LABOR FOR YOU, AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME" because my oldest was 98 minutes and my second was a premie and a CSection

Mindia wrote:It's the insurance company's responsibility to foot the bill. Plus, the family has gotten donations in excess of $400,000. I think they're pretty much covered at this point.

Ok the article said that insurance isn't footing the bill. Ok and this bitch has been on life support HOW LONG?

Lets do some simple maff here:

At approximately 10k a day to keep this shrub alive and assuming they have already received the entire 400k in donations that would keep her alive 40 days? That is also assuming that they aren't hugely in debt to begin with.

Enough assumptions...

What do you do now Mr. Mindia sir? Insurance isn't covering it and they are out of cash? What now? Oh wait... WE COULD TRY PRAYING!!!!

Everyone knows that works :ugh:

I think this thread has finally done it for me. I don't believe in god anymore. No real god could create people so full of rampant stupidity on purpose.

No irony detected - whatever amount of faults I have, and they are plentiful, stupidity isn't one of them; however, you can feel free to spout off Mindia banter that I don't agree with and speculate how that makes me stupid if you wish.
