Do eggs have lactose in them?

Postby Captain Insano » Fri Aug 05, 2005 2:42 am

I know eggs are supposed to be a dairy product but they are also kind of meat too right?

Do eggs and various egg-white products have lactose?

I'm really trying to cut most all dairy out of my diet. I have been getting more sensitive to it and for some reason just really lost all taste for milk/cheese/cream etc.

Are there any other commonly eaten foods that have a lot of lactose in them I should watch out for?

Lastly is there any really negative or positive reasons for cutting dairy out of my diet?

Milk and various other dairy products will likely be your primary source for Calcium...

Cut that out and you might be lacking much needed Calcium.

No lactose/milk sugar in eggs.

I'm all about the dairy and take calcium supplements on top of it. I eat cheese almost if not every day and make any protein shakes with skim milk. Dairy ends up being a major source of protein for me. I'm so glad I don't have issues with dairy!!

You said you are becoming more sensitive to it so maybe you have developed some lactose intolerance? Does it upset your digestive system?

They do make a lot of lactose free products - smart balance cheese is a good example of a brand that works well. Some milks -
Dairy Ease
100% lactose-reduced milk
Fat-free; 2% lowfat; whole

Lactaid
100% lactose-free milk
regular
fat-free; 1% lowfat; 1% lowfat chocolate; 2% lowfat; whole
calcium-fortified
fat-free; 1% lowfat; 2% lowfat
70% lactose-free milk
1% lowfat

Here is a sample of a lactose free menu:

You just really need to be careful that you don't deprive yourself of calcium so you don't run into bone density issues.

You can also take Lactaid tablets whenever you eat dairy.

milk gives me explosive shits, but I can eat ice cream, cheese, milkshakes all day long and it is not nearly an issue.

Wtf is up with that?

Red meats, chickens, fishes all have lactose in it... lots of it even more than milk. You are going to have to go the vegetarian route from now on. Maybe vegan even. Good luck.

Hmm... I have zero problem with meat... I eat a ton of it too.

but raw cheese (uncooked think opposite of a pizza) cream, milk just makes my ass explode for hours and hurts my stomach. I don't eat it.

The occasional pizza is ok but thats about it. I am defninitely dairy intolerant.

I want to try those tablets Martrae talked about... Where can one get those?

I used to grab em at the grocery store. My daughter was lactose intolerant until she was 2 and since I breastfed until she was 10 months I had to take the tablets or she had horrible stomache aches and screamed for hours.

I put butter on my noodles tonight and it hurt my stomach. It's happening more and more frequently, eating dairy and getting sick.

Vita...vitacal? vitachew, I dont know what it is called, but I take those a day, it replaces calcium I dont take in from milk like I used to.

Lactose-Containing:
Eggs, fish, meat, or poultry (breaded or creamed); luncheon meats; sausage; frankfurters; some brands of egg substitutes and powdered eggs

I just want to point out, since this is may be a little confusing, that the aformentioned eggs, fish, meat, OR poultry only contains lactose if it is breaded or creamed. Please take note of the semicolon.

Eggs, fish, poultry, and meat on their own do NOT contain lactose, and certainly would not contain more than milk itself. (Phlegm was being facetious.)

Powdered eggs and some egg substitutes you should read labels on to make sure they don't contain Sodium Casienate (a milk derivative) or Lactose.

If you can help it, don't cut all dairy out of your diet Cap'n. Take the lactaid pills and drink the Lactaid milk. I think you will find that the milk will taste better than normal milk. (My body reacted the same way - I lost most interest in all things dairy. I found that where normal milk tasted almost spoiled, Lactaid actually tasted pretty good.)

Milk, even with the lactose broken down, contains calcium more easily absorbed into your body than in pill or powder form (unless you are taking a magnesium/calcium powder suppliment - they taste like shit, but they work well).

I know nothing about Dairy Ease, but with Lactaid, I know for a fact that they introduce the Lactase enzyme into the milk to break down the lactose into the simpler sugars Glucose and Galactose. That's why it's lactose free. All the sugar is already broken down (it tastes sweeter too). I'm assuming Dairy Ease does the same.
Over time, at least from what I noticed, lactose didn't bother me nearly as much if I accidentally ate or drank something I shouldn't have.

Be a man.

Drink and eat as much dairy products as you can for a week.

BANG! Lactose intolerance conquered.

But you can't slack after that...

If you start slacking it will be back full force or worse.

Damn your vile treachery! I will never ever stop eating meat. The whole idea that something had to die so I could go on living gives me a hard-on.
