I don't see anything wrong with the "morning after pill" I wish it were available a few years back. Would have saved a lot of money and pain....speaking about abortion.....in the long run. For those that don't have health insurance that can cut the cost of birth control. Which I will also say that some BC is much better than others. The pill affects my skin, libido, and weight. The "3 month" shot for some women gives them the gift of not having a period at all....not me. I was spotting for most of the 3 months between shots. Then, I tried the new patch. It worked but I always had the "band-aid" sticky mark on my body and sometimes irritated my skin. The best BC I have found so far is the NuvaRing. Normal (if not VERY increased) libido. Shorter periods, less painful cramping, no pill to remember to take every day. No skin problems. Just for shits and giggles I switched back to the pill because my B/F said he could feel the ring sometimes during intercourse. And not that he said it bothered him but sometimes it would come out. But easy enough to put back. And my skin has exploded since switching back to the pill a month ago. And my insurance is cheaper to get the NuvaRing.
At any rate, though....I HAVE to take some sort of regular birth control just to keep my body under control..............but I believe the Morning After Pill should be OTC simply because some people can't affort a regular BC if their insurance doesn't cover it. And since it is more effective the sooner you take it, it would be silly to make people wait until the pharmacy opens on Mon. or after a holiday. And it would be a much better option than an abortion or adoption. I do believe there should be an age limit to be able to purchase the drugs OTC. But many many stores have to ID customers for purchasing beer and now some other OTC cold medicine.......so what's the diff

From the LA Times. Not exactly a bastion of moderates or conservatives.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me ... california

LA Times wrote:Health officials are investigating whether there are any links in the cases of four California women — at least two in Los Angeles County — who have died since 2003 of massive infection after taking the so-called abortion pill, RU-486, and a follow-up drug.

The state and federal probe follows an announcement last month by the Food and Drug Administration, after the June death of a Sherman Oaks woman, warning doctors and patients of the potential for serious bacterial infection under certain circumstances.

At the heart of the inquiry in California are why and how the deadly infections developed and whether more women might have been harmed.

"That's something we don't have an explanation for right now," said Dr. L. Clifford McDonald, an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is investigating the deaths along with the Food and Drug Administration, the California Department of Health Services and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services.

The FDA is also working with the makers of the two drugs to see if they were contaminated with an unusual bacterium found in the bloodstream of two of the women who died. Complicating matters, neither woman showed all of the usual symptoms of an infection.

The medical mystery in California is fueling the already charged debate over the risks, rights and morality of abortion.

RU-486, prescribed under the brand name Mifeprex, was approved by the FDA in 2000 over the strong objections of many abortion opponents. In recent weeks, opponents of the RU-486 regimen have renewed their call for the passage of Holly's Law, which would take the drug off the market in the U.S., arguing that there is no way it can be administered without risk.

The proposed legislation was named after 18-year-old Holly Patterson of Livermore, Calif., the first U.S. woman to die of infection after a nonsurgical abortion in 2003. The procedure is often called a medical abortion...

Lynn Bryant, whose otherwise healthy daughter Chanelle died in 2004, said that it is imperative for doctors, nurses and emergency room staff to know about the potential for serious side effects and death.

"I'd like people to know that it could be life-threatening, and also for the medical people to be aware of the dangers of the drug when [women] come in for treatment," Bryant said.

Monty Patterson, Holly Patterson's father, believes that there is no way to administer Mifeprex and misoprostol safely, in part because it is impossible to tell the difference between the desired effects of the drugs and the signs of a serious infection. Women who take the drugs, he said, are told that they should expect abdominal pain and heavier bleeding than during a normal menstrual period, results that are similar to the drugs' danger signs.

In addition, the women who had Clostridium sordellii did not run a fever, a normal side effect of an infection, according to the FDA.

"That's a real issue where a woman, a young woman, has to figure out if she's beyond these so-called normal side effects … to serious adverse events," said Patterson, who has spent the last 22 months advocating against Mifeprex. "You have to figure it out, be able to call for help…. I feel the drug is not safe. There are problems. I feel a lot of these problems have not been reported."

Reporting deaths and side effects of the drug is voluntary for doctors, although it is a requirement for drug makers. Opponents of the drug believe that doctors are loath to report bad outcomes in abortion cases, making the number of problems far greater than the public knows. The FDA estimates that, in general, only about 10% of problems with drugs are reported...

ARGH. RU-486 is *NOT* the morning after pill. Not not not not not. Completely and totally different drugs. Not even close to the same chemicals. If you'd done one iota of research, or indeed actually read the articles posted earlier in the thread, you'd know that. As a result, your posted article has as much bearing on the discussion as would if you interjected into a discussion of aspirin with an article on the dangers of oxycontin.

Clue bus is THAT way.

Please tell me where I said it was?

Heaven forbid I actually discuss things in a topic that are not perfectly on tangent, but completely related to anyone.

I support the morning after pill, but I found this article interesting, and informative.

Clue bus is indeed loading. Try and actually read a paragraph before you go apeshit, chief!

You posted an article into the thread that had been entirely discussion about the morning after pill, and made no qualifying remarks about it as being tangential to the discussion. Logically, therefore, the immediate inference is that you are posting this as being relevant to the discussion in question.

And 10sun, I was wondering exactly the same thing. heh

So because in your opinion you didn't want an abortion pill post in a morning after pill thread, it's ok to go apeshit?

Wow, maybe we should seek your permission for any segues that validly go into similar subjects that you might not deem correct.

Simple answer, you got snippy for no reason.

And yes, it's very relevant to the current discussion.

If you wanted to make a tangent, LABEL IT AS SUCH. If you post a random article to a thread with *NO* other comment about it, it is completely logical to make the deduction that your post is ABOUT THE TOPIC.

If you had said, "Hey, here's a interesting article on a related issue, not the morning after pill but RU-486", I wouldn't have said word one. However, that's not what you did, leading to the inevitable conclusion that you DID think RU-486 was the morning after pill, were posting warnings about it, and you engaged in Mindia-level backpedalling when called on it.

It is, however, in no way relevant to the current discussion, which was strictly about the Morning After Pill becoming legal and over-the-counter. No mention, anywhere, was made about RU-486 and any issues surrounding it. How exactly IS it germane and relevant to the discussion about the morning after pill, when it's a completely different drug used for a completely different purpose? Answer: it's not.

As I said, your post was the equivalent to posting a diatribe about the dangers of oxycontin into a thread about aspirin. Vaguely related drugs, but in reality utterly different in use, application, risks and intent.

Er, a bit of reach there, eh?

Given the thread days ago segued into Coat hanger jokes, Kings X, Kalecs vast experiences, BCPs, and Minrott's sexuality, I think its safe to bring an article up about the SAME FUCKING SUBJECT. You know, a drug they are trying to push that preempts pregnancy.

I'd say the RU 486 one is actually a more relevant subject, as there are probably major issues with it, versus the morning after pill, which if you had read my previous post you would see I have no issues with.
