New WOT book coming out..

Postby Lyion » Wed Sep 14, 2005 11:04 am

Anyone else following this ass series anymore?

I probably will check it out from the library sometime next year, since the last 6 Wheel of Time books were very disappointing to me.

I found humor in this GIF since WOT and Robert Jordan have become complete shit post book 4...

Lol that cartoon is pretty accurate.

I read through book 9, I think, and when book 10 came out I tried to start it but had forgotten so many of the characters in there, I put it down and haven't picked it up since. I like the overall story... but he makes so many trivial characters important later on in the books that it's very hard to keep track of everyone. Especially since everyone has such difficult and hard to pronounce names (ok... not Mat, or Perrin... but a lot of the Aes Sedai and the Aiel have tricky names).

Any book that needs a glossary at the back to keep track of all it's characters (which is only minorly helpful), is too complex for it's own good.

I'll likely eventually go back and plod my way through the books just to finish the story, but I'm in no rush.

I just bought A Game of Thrones by martin and tearing right into it.

There is a spoiler free review of book 11 (WoT) that I checked out, I admit it got me a little more excited about the last two books. I will read em both just to finally finish that damn series.

My only problem with the difficult character names is that if it's a very long name, and not immediately pronouncable, my brain tends to ignore it, and skim over the name rather than really *reading* it and committing it to memory. Which makes it difficult to recall what the fuck he's talking about when he brings up some trivial character with a long, tricksy name 4 books later, when they haven't been mentioned since book 2, and even then, passingly.

The only character name I've ever really been deadset against was !Xabu (I think that was it) from the Otherworld series by Tad Williams. Refused to read the book because of it. I understand that you are a fantasy writer, and that you'd like to have creative names... and I'm not asking for every character to be named Bill and Sally, but ... Jesus Christ... !Xabu? How do you even pronounce that?

!xabu, heh

the ! is a clicking/clucking sound you make with your tongue (it was all explained in the book)

ps, you do know there's a glossary at the back of the WoT books with all the pronounciations, no?

back to WoT

greatest series ever, even if it does frustrate people with his writing style sometimes

I think i've read all 11 books so far at least 3 times each (8+ for the 1st 5)

Get the audiobooks, it really helps with the names.

I need to go back and listen to them again. I've forgotten what happened in the last several books.
Inside each person lives two wolves. One is loyal, kind, respectful, humble and open to the mystery of life. The other is greedy, jealous, hateful, afraid and blind to the wonders of life. They are in battle for your spirit. The one who wins is the one you feed.

I was huge in the series like 8 years ago. I still love the story, but it has done nothing but drag the past 5 books (or is it 6? /shrug). I'm actually just starting book 10 since I barely have any time to read at all, but I guess I better finish it soon so I can be up to par when the next one comes out.

btw, how many books is he planning on making out of this series, and when is the release date?

I've read them all... The last two were a fucking unbelievable chore. The very last one was absolutely awful. It was just a bunch of new characters added a shit storyline with random boring events happening all over the place and probably the worst most boring ending I have ever read in any book anywhere.

A paraphrasing of every single Wheel of Time book:

Angst, angst, angst, more angst, still more angst, a bit of plot, back to angst, oh hey angst again, angst, maybe some plot here, whoops - back to angst, still angst, yes - still angst, lots of angst, women who are behaving like morons saying men are stupid or visa versa, woah - hey - angst here, definitely more angst, some plot again, wow - angst again, angst, angst, angst, GLORIOUS ANGST, Wonderful Angst (sung to the Spam song tune), maybe a couple pages of plot, and to close - Cliffhanger angst.

There, you've now read every single Wheel of Time book.

Chronicles of Narnia was an excellent series that I enjoyed ages ago. As for the WoT series the first few books were enjoyable reads. But the last 5 to 6 I skipped every 3rd page it seems. I don't want to read 4 pages about how the drapes in the castle were spun in place A,put aboard a cargo ship, got to the port, was heavily taxed almost causing a mutiny, blah blah to the blah, yakkity yak, blah blah..Kings castle.

I will certainly read the next book though in the hopes it's not another drone on clone.

The new Song of Ice and Fire book comes out in November. I can't wait.

George RR Martin is 100 times the writer Robert Jordan is.

There is more action, good writing, intrigue, and freshness in one of his novels than in 6 WOT novels.

I've read all the WOTs. Post book 4 they suck complete ass.

The first six or so books were great but godamn the last two or three fucking sucked. I can't see how you guys are still into them?

Ok the last book for example...

Perrin's shylock nosed jew wife gets kidnapped and Elayne the annoying bitch princess has a meeting with a bunch of fucking people we don't care about and gets the Lion throne and then the 18 year old Amrilyn or whatever moves outside Tar Valon to attack but doesn't, because attacking wouldn't be cool because that could take up another entire book.... The "climax" is that the stupid 18 year old amrilyn whose name is slipping my mind right now tries to turn a fucking chain into some cuendillar bullshit which is really just a fancy magical word for silly putty or some shit so that they can't get supplies into tar valon and somebody beans her over the head and shit.

The end...

more like "teh GAY" IF YOU ASK ME!

The whole series is full of pussy-men like Rand and Perrin and Matt always crying about bitches not liking them and letting women run their fucking mouths like they know shit.

If I had super cool magic or a nifty staff and hat or wolf eyes and a woman talked back to me I would throw a fireball at her.... When I wasn't throwing fireballs and making random shit explode I would be porking handmaidens and having people beheaded.

Robert Jordan is a hack. I think he should hand me the reigns on this crappy saga of his.

A really good series is "Brood of Eagles" by Jack Whyte.
it's about king arthur, but done as if it was historical fiction (ie they use legit history stuff, and he has a really cool way of explaining merlin)
