i have comcast, roomie and i both have computer hooked up to same cable connection via a switch..

whenever roomies computer is plugged in, it hogs just about all of the bandwidth.. leaving my computer to run at what seems like a 56k modem..

really noticable when playing eq.. with the exception of movement, everything has at least a 2 second delay.. ie hit spell gem, cast bar starts moving, couple seconds, then get casting la la message..

i pay for the connection, but i dont wanna be a dick and just leave him unplugged whenever im on my computer..

any thoughts?

What kind of switch? If you have a proper one, it should be giving each PC equal time.

What kind of switch do you have? If it is a managed switch look for a feature called "Bandwidth throttling". On a good switch you can assign routing priority to a process, IP address or port on the switch. You can be fair and assign 50/50 throttling between you and your room mate... or whatever priority you feel is fair 60/40, 70/30.

If it’s a cheapo switch take a look at what port your roommate is plugged into. Cheaper switches assign priority to lower number ports (i.e. Port 1 uses available bandwidth; Port 2 uses bandwidth when Port 1 isn’t using it). Switch the ports you and your roommate are using… his problem now.

I got a Linksys EtherFast 10/100 5-port workgroup switch.

model # EZXS55W

ive read up and down the manuals for it and it talks about segmenting some of the ports to 10mbps and others at 100mpbs .. but it doesnt say how.

turn off all of his peer to peer file sharing programs when he leaves his room, eventually he'll take the hint and just download his porn at night.

IS this a router/switch or just a switch? Thought you had to have a router on a WAN connection such as cable/dsl to get it to work properly.
