I've had the same pet since about level 30 or so. I've had it stabled a few times to experiment with other pets and have kept them level as well while I had them, but have always kept the kitty as my main and never had an issue getting it leveled to me.
Why does this appear to be such a problem?
The problem primarily rears its head when you pick up a pet that's significantly lower level than you. The pet used to gain a fraction (half? It's been a while since I spent much time on a hunter) of the experience you gained from a mob, which is in turn based on the level discrepancy between the player and the mob. This meant you'd have to grind level 55+ mobs at sixty if you wanted to level up a new critter, while using an essentially useless pet. Now, Blizzard's adopted a much more reasonable solution of having the pet gain experience based on the difference between the mob's level and the pet's level, though the mob still must be green or better to the player.
