I have to disagree with this to some extent Tikker, there is competiton, not so much in the spawn races, but in PvP, and the gear obtained by a guild who is able to beat certain encounters gives an advantage there.

there is no competition in gear in wow, most purple or green, of eagle or etc gear was just about as good as droped loot, hell in some case even better because of shitty ass stats or mods on it. Half the time, fuck gear, When i ran with my mage ninja squad of death, not many could stand up with 7 mages insta AE of deathz! pure powerz, you too can hit num lock and just spam key 6 while jumping all in the same area. It was amazing how people just kept running at us too.....
